So after Liverpool battered United 4-1 at Old Trafford, do we think the title race is open again? Or is it nothing more than a blip for The Best Team In The World™ - albeit the funniest blip ever! :D
A penalty against Man Utd at Old Trafford? All bets are definitely off

baseball baseball baseball baseball baseball baseball opening day in a couple weeks!
Meanwhile the World Baseball Classic is going on and has provided one stunning upset so far: the Netherlands eliminated the Dominican Republic. If you're unfamiliar with baseball this is probably similar to Belize beating the Soviet Union at something the Soviets were really good at in the 80s. So now I'm gonna be a traitor or something and root for the Netherlands to win it all.
The regular season should prove to be exciting because while the A's will probably be either surprisingly good or surprisingly bad, their AAA team (who play 20 minutes away and who have excellent seats for like 17 bucks) should be stacked.

Baseball usually bores the shit out of me but I do enjoy opening day. It's a pity that the Reds have been a bunch of candyasses the last couple years.

I don't suppose anyone else in here is a member of MyFootballClub.com?

Nope.
And I'm pleased they didn't take over my team (reportedly one they considered) even with the benefit of hindsight. We folded over the summer.

I'm most impressed by the new Brawn GP team. Ross Brawn bought the old Honda team.
They're still in (
http://www.sniffpetrol.com/2009/03/09/those-brawn-gp-sponsors-in-detail/) need of some decent sponsors though, neh? Brawn can't have bottomless pockets.
Christ knows what pearls of wisdom Murray is going to come out with this year, either :(
David on 16/3/2009 at 18:04
Rumour is they have IBM and bwin (a betting company sporting yellow, black and white corporate colours) as sponsors and $120m, courtesy of Honda, minor sponsors and Bernie giving the this year's TV money up front.
They really are quick though.
Alonso, Hamilton and Barichello did similar length medium/long stints today. Hamilton averaged 1m20.4, Alonso 1m20.3 and Barichello a cool 1m19.4
And that's on top of Alonso putting in a 2 lap qualifying stint to grab the quickest time of the day.
The only grumble is that the Brawn car broke down today, which is their first major problem.
It's stunning.
There was a quote from somebody who I think was a lowly Ferrari employee who described their performance as 'at front of those being lapped by Brawn'
Also thankfully Murray isn't commentating. Just the website and some special features! Thank god! :D

What about this new rule, that next year's F1 Drivers Champion will be the one who wins most races, even if he's not the one with the most points? It looks like some sort of variation of Ecclestone's medals proposal.
This means that if a driver would eventually win the first nine races, he could spend the second half of the championship crashing cars or not even bothering to show up :p
David on 18/3/2009 at 15:16
Yeah, that is a terrible rule. The driver's championship should also be reflect consistency as well as outright wins.
You might get a driver (lol massa) who can win 5 races by virtue of a) being in a Ferrari and b) qualifying in pole, but could end up crashing into walls for the other 13 races.
Should he win the championship over someone who's won 4 races, but come second in the other 13?
No, to be they shouldn't. After all, he has beaten 18 other racers on 13 other occasions.
FOTA (Formula One Teams Association) wanted to keep the points system and increase it from 10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1 to 12,7,9,6,5,4,3,2,1, making wins more relevant as well as giving a point to the fastest lap (and maybe pole) to keep people racing to the end. However the FIA rejected this for some crazy reason.
This is going to be confusing to the general public who don't follow F1 as closely as I do. It can't be good if a guy with 144 points is beaten to the championship by the guy with 50, as would be the case with my example above. Admittedly, this isn't likely to happen, but it is possible.
Slightly more confusingly is that the Constructors' Championship remains unchanged, so there the team with the most number of points does win.
Yeesh.
