Event Horizon was sort of joyfully hamfisted and incredibad throughout, not anywhere near as earnest or beautiful or atmospheric, so I disagree.

I really like Sunshine. It does falter a bit in the third act and the points it tries to make about God or whatever are more than a bit muddled, but there's solid acting all the way through with some nice character moments along the way, fantastic visuals, and a great soundtrack.
There's a handful of gruesome shots, but nothing too bad.

Adding to the choir here really, but I agree with a lot of what was said above - lovely for the first two-thirds but then a markedly ill-advised veering into slasher territory, which pretty much ruined the film for me.

So am I the only person who liked the slasher third-half?

I didn't mind the tonal shift too much. It was the random stupid Hollywood science bits in an otherwise fairly "hard" sci-fi movie that bothered me.
Space causing frostbite, explosive decompression, and that nonsense with the guy diving into the coolant were the most egregious.
RocketMan on 21/10/2009 at 06:16
LOL, YES I thought the exact same thing myself! That coolant wouldn't actually be like the ice water they used in the movie and ppl don't freeze in space like that...so stupid. They all dressed up like baked potatoes for nothing. Here's another one: What's with the automatic turkey carving knife that seems to be a motif in the movie? When you say explosive decompression, do you mean when Kappa had to get to the bomb at the end and decompressed the whole ship? It may not be so dramatic but that effect is believable.

It's ironic how it was being advertised as a realistic sci-fi movie.
Scots Taffer on 21/10/2009 at 07:21
Like any of you fucks have ever swam in coolant.
GTFO.
Chimpy Chompy on 21/10/2009 at 08:37
With a film this beautiful and moving, I'm not going to fuss too much over the science errors.
Muzman on 21/10/2009 at 09:51
What particularly bugs folks about the coolant bit?
There's some vagaries around the temperature, but there didn't seem to be anything vastly wrong about it that I can remember.
