I'd like to know if I can save when I want. (Unless that's already been mentioned somewhere and I missed it)

nickie, it's in one of these thread somewhere, but Stephane D'Astous confirmed manual saving. I was quite happy about that, I'm guessing you are too.

Wasn't it already mentioned somewhere that one of the devs had said that manual saving is still possible?
Thanks for dropping by, Ashpolt. I suppose that your views must be at least a tiny bit biased because of your position, but that's alright with me. At least you're positively biased! :p

Thanks guys. My mind goes blank with information overload sometimes and yes it does, Brethren!

Hey Ash! I have a question. Let's say you totally balls something up in the new Thief. Like you were going to blackjack someone and another guy just walks out from behind a corner and catches you in fullbright, red-handed etc. What are your options, from what you played? Other than quickload.
The options I had were basically fight or run, and either is going to present you with some difficulty. If you choose to fight, then Garrett will have a tough time against more than one enemy (though I did see Lucy successfully fend off 3 guards at once: how she did so, I have no idea!) and if you choose to run, you'll need to be pretty clever with your route, because the guards are almost as fast as Garrett. We were also told that once guards have been alerted, they won't go back to their normal patrols: they'll stay on some form of alert until you've left the area. Suffice to say, it's not like (say) Arkham Asylum, where you can just zip off to a safe place and rest while the guards get bored of searching for the guy who just knocked out 3 of their friends.
As for saving, yes, it's been confirmed that manual saves are in, and (I believe) quick saves are in there for PC too.
[EDIT] @Tomi: My "position"? I'm the one who's
not a mod. :P But as mentioned, being a mod doesn't really mean anything anyway.

If we seem overly positive, it's because we really did like what we played of Thief, nothing more.
What did you dislike the most? And why do you think your experience was different from many others who reported playing the game at E3?

Or T1 and T2 even. Pity, I tend to rely on dumb guards. But good news about saving and I'll also hope for quicksaving which I use a lot.
Any idea when we might get to see some pc, everything turned off, gameplay?
And yes, thanks for coming to answer some questions.
Edit. I've just seen (barely) that there was an (
http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=88868) update to a post yesterday on Eidos forums that:
Quote:
@domcom360 in Thief there will be both options. A manual save game feature and automatic checkpoint savings. Just posted by Stephane D'astous
So doesn't look like quicksaves will be available.

Oh right, I thought that you're a mod too. :o
I wasn't implying that you're intentionally lying to us or anything, I can just imagine you being quite excited about getting to play the new Thief, and therefore your views might be a little "biased" because of all the excitement. Well, that's how it would work for me at least... :p

To be honest, I'm yet to convinced that my experience
was different from "many" others who played the game at E3: when I asked on the official forums for examples of people who'd played it at E3 and not enjoyed it, the only examples were given were one guy who hadn't even played it (he'd spoken to someone on Skype who had
watched it being played - I mean, come on!) and one guy, who I understand visits this forum, who really just said that the game was "rough". He's welcome to that opinion, of course, but I felt it was stunningly well polished for a game around a year away from release. I used to work as a games tester (and no, not for Eidos or Square Enix, before anyone asks!) and I played games only weeks from release which were rougher. Hell, I've played
released games that have been rougher.
So yeah, I'm not entirely convinced that there was any large amount of negative response against Thief from those who played it at E3 - it certainly won about a million "Game of the Show" awards and similar (can provide pics of all the awards it received later, if people are interested.) Of course, if any of you can link me to some articles saying otherwise, I'd be glad to read them.
One thing worth mentioning which may explain why we enjoyed it more than others though: the press only got to play it for half an hour, we all got an hour (Master Taffer, in fact, went back the day after and played a further 15 minutes), so we've all played it for twice as long as the press, and have had more time to explore, consider our options, etc. We didn't have to rush through the demo to try and get to the end of it, we could take it at our own pace, which in a game like Thief is vital.
As for my least favourite part of the demo: as I've said over on the official forums, I wasn't massively sold on the bridge escape. It was fine, competently put together and had a couple of really nice moments, but it didn't really push my buttons. I'm much more a fan of the "observe, plan and execute" playstyle present in the infiltration levels rather than the fairly frantic action of the bridge escape. We were assured that there'd be more of the former and less of the latter in the full game, though - much as you'd expect.

I assume you're talking about this? He said more than "rough". He said it was "not good", and that GDC demo was "disingenous". It seemed quite harsh.

The guys at SneakyBastard also posted some negative tweets about it, though I can't find the links at the moment.
