Hello,
I've been lurking these forums for a while and have finally decided to register. Ive been playing System Shock 2 for about a year (on and off, mostly off). Recently i've come back to the game and decided to continue were I left off before; playing through Hard and Impossible with heavily restricted characters.
Note: I play all games with Straylight's Mod since it balances the game a little better
So far I've done energy-only on impossible (but wrench allowed for MedSci). That game I used Repair and lvl 4 Mod and carried about 6+ lvl 2 Mod Laser pistols. No psi of course. The most annoying enemies were cyborg assassins (laser pistol sucks against them) and psi reavers. I am also in the middle of a Hard OSA run (Wrench allowed, no leathal weapon no invis no adren no psi sword as well since I dont want to run through the game invisible or just melee everything).
I have a new idea but I need some input on it
Variant: Assassin
Play the game using stealth with restricted weapons.
Heavy and Exotic weapons are dissallowed (Too noisy/dangerious). Shotgun is dissallowed. Assault Rifle is a Sniper Rifle: cannot move when Assault Rifle is equipped (or at least when aiming/shooting) and cannot use Armour Piercing or Anti Personell ammo for Assault Rifle. Also one cannot use Auto mode on the AR. Use of the AR at point blank range is also discouraged.
Pistol and Energy weapons are unrestricted. However the assassin must silence his/her weapons before use (Must dual modify weapons before using). However FED's cannot be used for this since they are not designed to silence weapons. Basically you need at least lvl 3 Mod to use anything other then the wrench.
Stat restrictions: Strength and Endurance cannot be above 1/2 of agility rounded up; if you have 5 agility base you can only have 3 Str and End base. If you use swiftboost that counts as extra agility but you must keep using it constantly. Brawnboost/Endurboost can be used to raise strength and endurance above the limit.
Psi is allowed but discouraged: some disallowed powers are pyrokinesis (both) since they are too noisy. Invisibility is dissallowed (Because it is imbalanced) Adren overproduction is also dissallowed (an assassin does not usually melee) but Psi Sword is ok. and the strength/end buffs are dissallowed. Agility buff does not count as extra agility for the purposes of boosting STR and END.
Most important rule:
You cannot destroy cameras, but you also may NEVER set off the alarm.
The above is the most interesting rule; when I originally playtested this variant on Normal, it made the game much more interesting since I had to be careful in avoiding cameras; in some cases hacking security is NOT an option.
As you can see, some of the variant rules are for flavour, some are just to make it harder (Ie no invis, AR restrictions)
Suggestions on the variant? Rule changes I should make? I will be playing on Hard or Impossible.

All I can say is; good luck beating the BotM brain room with that playstyle...

If its possible to beat the brain room with laser pistols on Impossible, surely it is possible to do so with a Pistol with Anti Personell Bullets which deals about 5x more damage then the laser pistol. I think you underestimate the power of the pistol.

The pistol does 20% less damage than the AR with the exact same ammo type, so I have a reason to prefer the AR and strafe around. ;)

It's possible to beat the brain room with a mêlée weapon and a bit of patience, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Killing those floating things with any sort of ranged weapons is child's play in comparison.

You need more than just patience; craploads of skill.

I don't think you understand: Its possible to beat the brain room with just LASER PISTOLS; which deal MUCH less damage then a normal Pistol. The variant might be hard in some areas but the brain room is hardly one of them. By your logic its impossible to do the brain room with just cryokynesis but it has been done (not all of us abuse Soma Transference and Invisibility).

Of course it's possible, since the laser pistol deals more than 1 damage point.
The question is if you have enough batteries to recharge it while trying to hit the stars and then the brain while strafing like hell.

I didnt recharge my pistols: I carried 6 laser pistols all set to overload with 250 charge each into the BOTM. I didn't actually fight the enemies in the brain room (By that point 3 pistols were out of charge).

It isn't a good idea to fight the enemies, they respawn right away as far as I know. And to kill the PSI reavers for good you need to kill their brains.
It's simplest just avoiding enemies while attacking the main targets.
