The grapple arm is absolutely essential for when you inevitably get stuck in the floor of a base interior. But it's mostly useful for speed boosting yourself when traveling.

Got the prawn suit! This thing is fun! Didn't expect it to actually just clonk around on the seafloor, but it totally works and makes me see the environment from a whole new perspective. First thing I did was run up and punch a fish. Then a sandshark. PLAYTIME'S OVER, FISHIES! :ebil:
Welcome to the big leagues, henkster. <3

I keep hearing/reading that
Below Zero is a fairly different experience from Original Flavor
Subnautica, and that, depending on what people liked best about the first game, they might come away somewhat disappointed. It's smaller, more focused, more story-driven, the environments are less varied, you go less deep and the depths are less dangerous. All in all, to me it sounds a bit like a standalone expansion with a different focus - which is fair, if you know what to expect.
I'll definitely be playing it, but I won't necessarily go in expecting the same kind of experience that
Subnautica gave me. God, that was a fantastic game - and surprisingly so for me, since it was pretty much the first survival game of its kind that I ever played.
P.S.: If anyone wants to try
Subnautica in VR, it's almost mandatory to use (
https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica/mods/173) the VR Enhancements mod. It's still a bit clunky even with the mod, but without it I wouldn't recommend playing
Subnautica in VR - not least because without the mod the game HUD is always fixed in the same direction, so if you turn around the HUD doesn't follow. The mod allowed me to play standing up and to turn by physically turning, which IMO makes a huge difference to how comfortable or un- a game feels in VR.

From what I've played so far, yeah, it's more of the same. The UI, engine, basic game mechanics etc. are unchanged. If you're familiar with the first game, there's basically no learning curve to this one. There's a more immediately fleshed-out story rather than the gradual slow burn of the first game, but it's still doing a good job of building interesting mysteries. I don't think it was ever going to be possible to recapture the lightning in a bottle of the first game's sense of exploration and mystery, but it's about what I expected - more Subnautica, which I'm still gonna love.

Been playing Below Zero for several hours today and it's very much more of the same gameplay but with a new story, environment and vehicle. I haven't bothered much with surface exploration other than the base I was directed towards in the beginning. One thing I dislike was having to stumble upon the Rebreather blueprint through random exploration instead of being directed towards the location, given how essential that piece of kit is for exploring past 100m for a useful period of time without being glued to a vehicle.

I've been using air pumps and piping the air down. You can even branch the pipes out. I never needed to in the first game, but it's coming in useful here as I don't have any real vehicles yet.

I did build one of those air pipe setups at one point early on but never had much use for it either.
Anyway, I did build my 3rd base earlier today (this is in Subnautica 1 btw), in a nice cave with a thermal vent at ~300m depth, then after that started exploring downwards, going down to 700m depth for the first time. It's wild, there's like a whole world down here! :D Got back up to my base just in time for my Prawn to run out of juice. Also my Seamoth got eaten by monsters. Guess that means I'm swimming now. You could say things are going.... SWIMMINGLY! HAH HAH. ok goodnight.

I'm fairly certain you find enough fragments for the first vehicle + vehicle constructor at 60-100m depth in the first underwater biome you come across past the initial water location. It also has a fair amount of oxygen plants spread out in a generous manner, allowing you to explore it to a reasonable extent as long as you don't go below 100 (at least not longer than to correct your depth). At least with the oxygen tank equipped.
