Ok so Subnautica didn't really grab me on my first try, but on my second try now I've played 18 hours of it in 3 days. I am hooked.
The start was pretty stressful with me swimming around and dying of thirst over and over because I couldn't find any water. Finding water in the middle of the ocean is harder than you'd think. Eventually I got the basics figured out tho and set about base-building and upgrading stuff. At one point where I was grinding away on upgrades I worried this would be like No Man's Sky where once I get the upgrades I want there's no longer any reason to keep playing, but nope, it's doing a pretty good job of hooking me in with the story as well. I'd still say The Long Dark does a better job at being a survival game with a story, but I'm reasonably intrigued by this world and its story.
The interface could use some streamlining in places tho. I'm playing on PS4 and arranging the quickslots are a real hassle. You can't sort them. When you add a new tool it just gets added to the first slot and whatever is last gets bumped off, and the problem is that there always seems to be 6 tools I always need but only 5 slots, so there's a constant juggling going on.
So anyway, I've got a decent base and a seamoth with a few upgrades and I've visited every crashed lifeboat I know of. Not entirely sure what I'm meant to do next. Find my way into the Aurora? I've circled it a few times without finding a clear way in.
edit: y'know, while I was playing I was thinking that the gameworld is so well laid out it's hard to imagine it's all procedurally generated. Well, I just did some reading and found out that it's NOT procedurally generated. :D You kinda take it for granted with games of this style these days, but going for a more handcrafted approach was clearly the right approach here, even if it does diminish replayability a tad.

There are several useful mods for the PC version and the base UI isn't that horrible with M/KB.

There's a giant hole with wreckage. And yea if you haven't been inside the Aurora yet, that's certainly the next step.

When approaching the Aurora, be really, really mindful of the distant roars of the Reaper Leviathan on either the front or back of the ship or you may suffer a quick, horrible death.

Also, be careful around the damaged parts of the ship, some of them look like you can go inside, and you can manage to squeeze in, but you're not supposed to be able to, so you can get stuck "inside" the ship and be unable to get back out.
As a more general hint, your goal is pretty much always to get upgrades and equipment that let you go either further, or deeper. As you manage those, you tend to find more story which hints at where to go next.
In-between goals are being able to get the resources you need to create those tools.

Yeah I know and I did find a place that looked like it might take me further in, but there were crabs in the way! They freak me out! Was hoping there's another entry point somewhere. Any tips for dealing with crabs? I got a heatknife and I just found a recipe for stasis gun.
And yeah I get the sense this would be a much smoother experience on PC, but for this kinda longplay gaming I wanna sit on the couch so I'm playing on the PS4. The perfomance is kinda choppy too. I once glitched my seamoth inside a wreckage that didn't pop in until I was already INSIDE of it and my seamoth blew up.
Ducky, yeah I've had a few run-ins with that thing already! Got the hull reinforced on my seamoth now but haven't outfitted it with torpedoes yet. Should I?

Those two are iirc the only things that will let you deal with enemies at this point, so just knife those small *bleeps*. The Aurora has the next couple of items that will help you out against enemies.

I ended up making a repulsion cannon and just pushing them out of the way. I'm in now! But I've got no clue about where to find the code to the door! I've scoured my data logs but nada. Hints please!

Not entirely sure how far you're in, but you may need to cut through a door to get to the code you need. Also several logs are scattered throughout the Aurora with codes for various doors.

Hmm, ok. I did cut through one door but couldn't find anything of value. I guess I'll get back in there and see what I missed.

There are some relatively small spaces you need to go through in certain sections, big enough to comfortably fit the player but small enough that you may miss them if you aren't looking for ways through.
