Deus Ex: Invisible War
As much of I played of it, I was very unimpressed. At the time my graphics card couldn't really hack the resolutions with high details and bloom etc, and the load times were crippling due to not having enough RAM. I'm pretty sure that I can now run DX:IW maxxed out and not worry about load times interfering with my enjoyment of the game, but is it worth it?
The other things that I recall bugging me about the game was the seemingly simplistic plot that had been delivered in the first few levels, the lack of environmental awareness of the NPCs (a guy jogging around the lap-track while the building is crumbling due to a terrorist attack), the way that super-conspiracy stuff was introduced within the first few minutes of the game and it seemed like the conspiring groups were going to be caricatures when compared to those powerful forces in DX.
So, if I could get my hands on a cheap bargain bin copy, is it even worth doing so? What's good about this game?

It's only worth doing so if you really want to join in on all of the rantfests/discussions about the game.
You could probably beat the game in 1-2 days if you're crazy about it. It's not very long.

I have as much desire in engaging in Deus Ex nerdery as I do engaging in System Shock 2 nerdery (read: none whatsoever).

On its own merits, it's an ok game. Compared to its prequel, it's awful.

I'm usually of the opinion that it's important to play enough of a "notable" game to get the basic idea and vibe, ... just for the sake of cultural literacy ... just like there are certain movies I know I'll roll my eyes at, but I want to see them anyway, just to know what the vibe is going on in the world.
"Notable" doesn't mean necessarily good, but whatever has a glancing claim at being culturally relevant (not just popular) to its time. Even if DXIW isn't, DX is, so I'd think it'd be worth it by association. But that's just how I tend to look at things; just think about what you care about. General opinion seems to be it's a bearably okay game, not great, some fun parts, try not to think in terms of comparisons...

I'd say go ahead and play it. Despite all it's problems it's still quite a bit better than most FPSs out there in my opinion. I'm guessing you already know, or have directly experienced, most of the complaints about the game out there at this point when it comes to gameplay, so you can't really be any further let down in that regard by playing it through all the way.
As far as story goes, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's worth playing for that aspect alone if you were a fan of the first game. While it is pretty boring for a little over half of the way through the game (as you have already seen), after that it actually picks up quite a bit, and I would say almost approaches the level of Deus Ex at times.

I'm also interested in playing IW. I've heard compared to the first DX it sucks, but what about compared to games nowadays? To Bioshock? (p.s. I think BS blows chucks and couldn't even finish it)
edit: Zyme sorta just answered my question. Thankya!

Best way to go is to sign up for the 99 cent trial month of Gametap. I played it twice in my first month, then cancelled the service ( which can now be done online!).
The game was okay. I think I liked it better than Thief DS, but pretty much everything negative you've heard about it is true.
I wonder if the games made the console money they were so obviously going for. A couple of Xbox guys I work with never heard of Thief DS, and had no interest in DXIW (Halo fanbois).

Yeah, play it. You won't love it but it's pretty good. It's got a great story, in a way, depending on how you categorise "story"; dialogue is ok, plot points are variable, characters are the same but mostly juvenile, bad guys are obvious, motivation is lacking, linearity is thinly disguised, sidequests fall flatter than a fat joke at a weightwatchers party, over arching themes are actually pretty interesting and that's largely what saves it for me. Everyone else's milage varies wildly although is generally a lot lower than mine.
Clonking people with the baton on strength 3 however is enourmously amusing, as is the ability to stack explosives and set them off all at once. Compared to the first its a lot easier on the eyes, ears and fingers even if the price was wandering around things like arcologies only twice the size of my parent's house.
The first Seattle section I find pretty fun as there's a ton of ways to do it.
It's also one of the few games where I don't feel like I could or should kill everyone in sight (except maybe the leaders of the various factions; couldn't wait to get hold of them). Sure the game doesn't let you half the time, but thre's plenty of sections where you can run riot. And I have, but I always feel like I owe the game a proper play in return. It's world is cold and heartless enough as it is without my help. Weird I know, but there it is.

DX:IW is on Steam now, right?
