Well you got cigarettes and booze in SS2 too, so we weren't that confused... It seems zyme disappeared between Deus Ex's time and 2114, though...

Actually, I kind of wonder why he coughs at all, maybe because he smokes the entire cigarette in one breath, but really, you don't cough after you've gotten used to a few. Although, if you make him smoke a lot, then he should develop a smoker's cough so he'll cough randomly throughout the game. THAT would add some suspense, I bet.
Then you could even have a cough suppression meter, where you have to furiously press spacebar as fast as you can whenever a coughing fit happens. That would be cool.
