er. when the lock picks are out, how do you break a locked wooden door open (not with infant strength)? do you just bang the door with a combat knive or crawbar, or blow it up with an explosive device?

On some doors my Dragon's tooth don't even make a scratch... In such cases I usually place a grenade on the door, and use the sniper rifle to nuke it open... I use the rifle because it usualy alerts the guards... I can remain in the shadows unnoticed...

Some doors can be taken out with the Dragons Tooth especially and other low tech weapons (mastered low-tech) and the Sniper Rifle (mastered rifles) Some can't, you generally tend to recognise which are which when you've played the game for a while. Otherwise, just use explosives of any kind.
Deiyen on 10/6/2002 at 18:34
It really depends on the door and the weapon you're using. 25% strength doors can be bashed open with just about any melee weapon, one swing of the Dragon's Tooth should be enough. I've mastered my low-tech weapon skill, and I find that 50% strength doors I still can't break open with my Dragon's Tooth. You might be able to break them open with some other weapon though (perhaps a normal sword). Any door with less than INF strength can be blasted open with an explosive. I assume we all know what is considered an explosive? LAM's, GEP's, etc. I usually chuck a LAM at the target and either run or get behind cover.
Btw, don't forget that sometimes you can find a key. ;) Don't underestimate the power of the right nano-tech lock combination.

he he right... happened to me once or twice already... wasted four lockpicks and realized I had the key once I was in... :laff::erg: I always try my keys first now

Some doors that can't be bashed open by a master of Low-Tech weapons with the Dragon Tooth can be opened when the Combat Strength aug is activated.
Deiyen on 11/6/2002 at 21:24
That's a very good point gbayles. I don't think I've ever tried the Combat Strength augmentation before, I always choose Microfibral Muscle, and I've found that I don't have too much for it. So next time I'll have to try out Combat Strength, even if just for bashing open locked doors.

oh, btw, I have found out that. if you throw in a small TNT box to a door (and you have to find some place to hide immediatly like behind a wall or you will take damage too), it does not only blow open the door, but also takes out the lazer traps and the turrets too, works great in the mission that you need to send the distress signal to the other base, and there are lots TNT boxes laying around. well, I just bought Deux Ex about a week ago and it's great. It's pretty much like a combination of Thefit series + System Shock 2 with the Unreal engine, although not much new.

A good rule of thumb I have found:
- doors with <50% strength can be broken by Dragon's Tooth or other melee after a couple of slashes (weapon depending)
- doors with >50% strength must be blown open with explosives of some sort - a LAM will do, though TNT boxes work best and have largest radius
Basically, what Deiyen said :cheeky:.
Another thing to note is that a TNT box will blow anything up in a spherical radius around it, so I always place a box say, in the middle of a room, so all doors in that room are blown off. Even works through walls, but interestingly doesn't even scratch the furniture;).

That's fine as a rule of thumb - but, there are doors with >50% strength that can be opended via Dragon Tooth with Combat Strength aug. And I recall coming across a door with 50% strength that couldn't be bashed open with the sword. Perhaps it matters what the door is made from.
