So because Titus is willing to make jokes that "go there" that makes it sad and depressing?

you tell me why it was sad and depressing dethtoll, I can't figure it out...
I just don't get how it was ever supposed to be funny, I'm not sure exactly WHY it wasn't...I laughed occasionally, but it was more of a nervous laugh because my friends were around

If you can't laugh at "srs bsns" issues like mental illness and domestic abuse, then you're only allowing it to drag you down.
For those of you who hate it, what are your families like? Are they comparatively normal, or are they screwed up? It's an honest question. I'm curious, because mine's pretty screwed up and I find the show hilarious enough to have it on DVD.

Don't bring it up and it WON'T bring me down! It's not funny, the show sucks, that's why it isn't around anymore, that's why it didn't last, period.

Screwed up is a pretty broad term. I'm from a relatively good family (in Titus's terms) that can hardly be defined as a family because it's been so divided for so many decades (immediate and otherwise). Most won't talk to most. No cards, no gifts, no reunions, no holidays, no phone calls, no gettogethers. That's the way it's always been, that's the way we swore we wouldn't be, and that's the way we've become. Do I want to laugh about it? no. I don't even find it funny in an inane/shockvalue way.

Or you could stop flailing your arms every time someone cracks an off-colour joke. Get over it.

No, the show was cancelled because of executive meddling. They actually tried to get the main character and his girlfriend to break up, Titus wasn't having it, he called the execs stupid one too many times... and suddenly the show ended.
Facts. They're nice things to have. You should try it.

My family, on the other hand...
Well my dad was a verbally, mentally and later physically abusive bully who hated spending money on such unimportant things as
groceries,
clothing and
medical care. He hated working and was fired from his job as an industrial equipment salesman because he would drive his car to a parking lot and nap all day. He was also a philandering, gladhanding schmooze who cheated on my mother behind her back for years. We lived in semipoverty for years because he hoarded money, and my mother took on a job as a school lunchlady just to make ends meet.
That said, my mother was a screeching fundie who banned from the house a laundrylist of things she found offensive when I was growing up, including cartoons such as He-Man and Thundercats. She has a nasty habit of doing nice things for you then turning around and trying to make you feel guilty because she does nice things for you. She's incapable of taking criticism, and being angry with her makes her angry with YOU because how dare you get angry with her. She once told me "evolution was invented by Communists to destroy God." Then yelled at me when I looked at her funny. Can you believe she's a (
http://www.apraxiaeducation.org/whois.aspx) teacher now? (her blurb is at the top)
Both are domineering control freaks. I love my mother and I don't hate my dad, but it's easier to keep them at arms length otherwise I'll get so pissed I might break something I can't replace.
For years a large part of Mom's side of the family (she has two brothers and two sisters, all of them younger than her) would simply pretend we didn't exist; part of that was Dad's fault, as he was and is a total dickbag. We would show up largely uninvited to family gatherings hosted by these people, and after my parents divorced and it was just Mom and I, we often left early because nobody wanted anything to do with us. My Grandma is slowly turning into Aunt Bethany from
Christmas Vacation and my Grandpa is tough, lovable, but rather crusty and a little racist. He's not as shrill about his views as Mom is though. My cousins would often switch, at the drop of a hat, from trying to include me to shutting me out of their activities. They were spoiled, rich children with no respect for other peoples' property, and whenever it was Mom's turn to host Thanksgiving it was always a disaster and the toys that I fought so hard to get would be broken before the night was out.
My grandpa on my dad's side drank himself to death thanks to his wife, who was a nagging, chattering harpy who, like dad, was obsessed with money but didn't want to spend it or work for it. She spent her life in a housecoat and doled out physical punishment on a daily basis. My Dad was the only one of three children to have any kids- just the one, me; my Aunt Deanna is a spinster and an accountant who seems to think it's perfectly okay to tell me I'm too old for "toys" such as
motherfucking DVDs but has no problem giving cheap $1 DVDs to Dad; my Aunt Pat (who died in 1999) kept herself somewhat secluded from her siblings for as long as I could remember because she didn't want them to know she was a lesbian (they still deny it.)
Anyway the tl;dr is my family is one interesting bunch and I find humour in seeing another screwed up family. Especially since it's obvious Ken Titus was capable of love. TV dads are never as cruel as in the real world.
ZylonBane on 26/7/2009 at 04:01
Well, that answers the question of how screwed up you had to be to enjoy Titus.
june gloom on 26/7/2009 at 04:57
And maybe you're right. Most people who wave their hands in distress at black comedy like certain topics are sacrosanct usually have no experience with such. If you live it, you learn to laugh at it because otherwise it tears you apart.
But since Stop Enjoying Things seems to be the rule here in TTLG-land, I guess that means I have to stop laughing at a show that I identify with.
Sulphur on 26/7/2009 at 06:10
Don't mind the assholishness, CommChat does that a lot. You know you have a right to an opinion no matter what other people say, and it's the same the other way around. It's just the usual clash of opinion on a level bereft of the more positive human characteristics that's par for the course. Grain of salt, man. It's pretty much mandatory.
Thief13x on 26/7/2009 at 06:22
It must feel nice to have had contact with all those people in the 21st century there dethtolll.

As long as you stop flailing things at us for not laughing at it as well I'm sure we'll be happy.
Also, I'm not sure a dysfunctional family is a prerequisite to enjoying Titus, I mean no offense but where is the

I mean, I could really go on and on about how some of the shit I dealt with growing up as well (which is surprisingly similar to some of the shit you dealt with) but it is pointless because it means nothing to whether you enjoy a certain type of comedy or not.

No, the show was cancelled because of executive meddling.
Also, if it was a blockbuster I somehow doubt the exec would've canceled the show because Titus wouldn't break up with his girlfriend. Why the hell did he care anyway if the show was doing well?
