Does every thread eventually go thru a "Dethtoll vs. the World" phase?
This Titus argument here seemed pretty inane, so I went onto youtube to see exactly what the hell it was all about (apparently every episode seems to be on youtube).
I don't know, it seemed okay as far as traditional sitcoms go. Pretty standard fare. Sure, "edgy" humor thrown in but in today's television realm it seems pretty normal (compared to It's Always Sunny or South Park this is pretty calm). I laughed a bit. Some bits didn't really offend me but it felt like they were trying a bit too hard ("synchronized swimming - drowning girlfriend"). If anything, I'd say it's biggest drawback is it's attempt to keep its themes edgy. All of the jokes that fell flat were OH MY GOD CAN YOU BELIEVE HE SAID THAT?!?! IMO, it doesn't deserve much attention but it also doesn't deserve the opposite reaction of OH MY GOD YOU LIKE THAT SHIT SHOW BLAAAAAAAAAAAAH.
P.S. King of Queens is a good show. It's not worth any more than just stumbling on it and deciding there's nothing better on, but it's certainly not deserving of being compared to the abomination that is Two and a Half Men.

I've been watching the unedited Ren and Stimpy cartoons lately since I haven't seen it since I was a kid, and oh my god. It's held up amazingly well. There's even a few jokes I missed or totally forgot when I was young, like Powdered Toast Man being sworn into the presidency stating "I, Powdered Toast Man, do solemnly swear to relieve all Americans of their basic human rights". It's also amazing to notice how hard they were pushing Nickelodeon's standards. Fantastic stuff.

Also, I'm not sure a dysfunctional family is a prerequisite to enjoying Titus
Maybe not, but it sure does help...I love(d) the show. Stacy Keach was ace.

Well, that answers the question of how screwed up you had to be to enjoy Titus.

The single worst sitcom EVER is Two and a Half Men. FUCK that show is terrible.
Hell, I don't watch a
lot of TV but I'll tell you that if I ever catch an episode of the above show (on long haul flights or in hotel rooms, typically) I actually get a fair few laughs from it. It's absolutely horrible and cliched to hell and back, but it actually recognises this fact and never tries to be more than brute force low brow funny always going for the low hanging fruit and the cheap double entendre gag. But that's fine by me.

It can't be worse than Will & Grace. Where I find Titus too realistic and harsh (IMHO OK :p ), I find Will & Grace the complete opposite, like a hardcore Christian in sitcom form.

I gotta say tho, dethy - it's healthy that you can laugh at that stuff as a type of therapy. My wife and I come from relatively healthy families, but when I was a pastor, I was in an area where it was 24/7 dysfunction - abuse, addiction, incest, assault, poverty, neglect, etc. I remember back when the Jerry Springer show was really big and those folks could just laugh at it because they identified with it on some level, but it just made me sick to my stomach - still does. I hope in time I can actually laugh at stuff like Titus instead of going into induced seizure/flashbacks from all the bad experiences. I think my revulsion is a psychosomatic reaction to the helplessness I felt because in the end I couldn't do much to help those people.
On a related topic, it *does* really piss me off sometimes how the men/husbands/fathers in these sitcoms are portrayed as retarded crotch grabbers who can't get themselves dressed in the morning. Raymond is the worst example of these, with that Jim Belushi show in a close second. Here I am sitting down from a break of feeding my kids, paying the bills, cooking dinner and changing laundry to watch this show where the guy literally can't find the fucking silverware in his own kitchen. Worse, he doesn't have enough brain cells to help his kid through some minor elementary school crisis without the MILF (who is inevitably an attorney or NASA physicist) swooping in to clean up the mess he's made.
I think this maybe started with Archie Bunker and Al Bundy but those guys were over the top parodies, like Homer Simpson. Raymond and some of the others (Hefernan included) are just dumb fucks married to hot women. I'd like to see a show with a really smart, heterosexual male who looks like Brad Pitt, married to a fugly idiot woman, with the entire plot of each episode based around what a stupid fuck she is - we spend half-an-hour laughing at her. Women's rights groups would jump on that shit before the first commercial. :tsktsk:

Unfortunately, Nick's standards tend to push back. See also the dear departed Rocko's Modern Life, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, and Invader Zim.

WHAT? A hardcore Christian would consider every single Will & Grace character to be destined for the fiery pits of Hell. It was certainly a shrill show though. I could only put up with it for two or three seasons before I lost interest.

The first time I watched it, a friend was telling me about how good the show was. So we flipped it on, and they had an episode about how one of the guys would get aroused around pregnant woman. That was the entire episode. Needless to say it was creepy as fuck.
The next time I saw it, they had a two-minute joke where the kid was taking singing lessons. The joke was that he was singing out of tune. Yep, that was the joke. The laugh track seemed to LOVE it, though.

Oh god, I had forgotten about Will & Grace.

This is 100% true.

Back to Futurama...
Well, it wasn't a joke as some thought because comic-con was just around the corner.
The Futurama panel was meant to feature the cast. It didn't. No-one was allowed to mention the contract negotiations, and it was just a bit shit.
Crap :(

I never assumed that it was a joke or for hype.
It's definitely just a part of the negotiations in order to get the cast to ask for less. Whether it'll work or not is another story, though... still keeping hope.
