If you have the money, take some booze for the man of the house.

As an aside, I will be spending the early morning of June 4th in Los Angeles, from around 12:30 am until 9:00 am, when the flight leaves for Osaka. Any nocturnal LA taffers want to swing by? :D
Ah you're going to Osaka? That's where I went. :) If you're sticking around go to Namba. :) And Osaka castle. :)

He's going to Kyoto mang, pay attention. Kansai international is just where the plane ride stops.
Digi, I'll send you a pm with my phone number/email for whenever you get settled in enough start thinking about meeting up.
Also, karaoke *is* surprisingly awesome. You should definitely give it a go while you're here. Being just in the company of friends in various stages of inebriation makes all the difference.

I got your PM, Morte. I hope you're not planning on any hot man-on-man sex or anything - I am really awful at things like that. I have no idea what the rubber chicken is for, and seriously, what's up with the fruitcake cut into neat little star-shaped wedges?
I'm crazy enough to have done American karaoke before, in front of huge crowds of people, so I don't think the Japanese karaoke will be a problem. :thumb:
sparkle, as they said, I will be based in Kyoto, however we will be taking a few trips to Osaka. You can peek at my schedule which I posted above.
Right on, Insertnamehere! bring on the Russian hookers!

You get bonus points if you find this place (in Kyoto):

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/28/58417299_754404f5a8.jpgI'm not sure if it was mentioned before, but you should know
oishii (delicious/good) des(u) (is) or
oish(i)katta des(u) (past form).
the verb des(u): if you just say the adjective then it's the lower form of speech (which you use with colleagues but never with your boss..).
'u' and 'i' are often not spoken. na i tu fa ru would be the nightfall - you get the drift.
And:
aaaah/uuuuh atsui! (atsui=hot). Use it when you enter a hot spring, they'll love it - besides it IS hot (45°C anyone?)
PS: the weather will be hot/wet.

Hi guys,
I'm going to be keeping a journal of my trip on my blog.

So far just one post, about the plane rides. Another soon to follow.
I'm also starting a flickr album... uploading photos now. Mostly architectural focus, of course.

They haven't managed to kill me yet.
Looks like I am getting the full-Japanese experience. First a super-typhoon hits and now a major earthquake. Both managed to happen in places I wasn't, the typhoon just brought me a ton of wind and rain, but I hear over 40 people died. The earthquake injured 800 people in northern Japan (killed 8), but we felt aftershocks all the way down in Sendai (where I am spending the night right now). Crazy stuff...
The quake was a 6.8, and the typhoon was similar to a strong 4 or a low 5 on the US hurricane scale. Supposed to have been the worst storm to hit Japan in 10 years. Now all we need is a Tsunami and the set will be complete.
Around this time next week, I'll be back in Florida. What a trip it's been... wow.
