So, I've made it all the way to the secret enterance and shot the arrow-key dealie into the statue. But no matter what I do, the guards in the first room detect me and attack. Now, I have been able to reach the library despite this -- no other guards detecting me -- and when I get there, the priests are alert, and I am unable to sit in the reading chair. And furthermore, on my most recent attempt, the first guards began attacking one another for no apparent reason. At first, I saw this as a perfect opportunity to sneak past them, but now I think it evidence of a broken quest. Can anyone give me any advice as to how I should overcome this?

Be sure that when you get to the guard barricks that you use the sneak mode from that point on to the end of the mission to help avoid being caught.

Perhaps wait until night time and they will be in bed asleep.

From the time that you enter the Imperial Palace from The Old Way, you should treat this as an absolute stealth mission. Your best bet is, as mentioned above, to enter late at night and sneak, sneak, sneak.

Well, I've tried all of the above, and no matter what I do, the guards detect me as soon as I enter that first room. Although, my sneak is only 30 -- maybe that has something to do with it.

At 30 they can still hear you moving around so that could have a great deal to do with it,in case you didn't know you can get your sneak up quickly by moving around in the sneak mode when you are in the cities,caves,tombs and so on.

im stuck on this quest.....how do u fire the arrow of extrcation, i cant move or get through the walls that the quest page is telling me, and i cant jump into the middle of those gates, any ideas how to shoot the arrow?

Take your boots off when sneaking. That might help (especially if you are wearing heavy armour). When you get 50+ stealth, the boots you wear doesn't matter anymore.
You have to be standing in the right place, and you get a message telling you if you are in the right spot. First you have to press two buttons to open the big walls. Then tread on the platform across from the statue and you will get a message. Now save and equip the arrow, turn towards the statue and aim at where the hands are holding the sword when you fire. You will get a message if it works. If you don't, reload and try again.

Wait, you took on the stealthified stealth-mission of stealth without having a decent Sneak skill?:eek: I don't suppose you can cast invisibility spells or something...
