While searching for the Shield of Heroes (is that what it's called?), I've cleared the first two levels of the Crypt, but I can't find any way to get to the third level. I've disarmed all the pressure plate traps on level 2, and tried to find out which levers to pull in orderto fullfil the "1-3-1" code and I've activated the cross on the wall of one of the rooms - but to no avail. I can't raise the damn portcullious.

Just to be sure, you have past the portcullis near Azrael's body ?
(btw That one opens via the hidden switches located in the outer corners of the last center wall segments; before you encounter Azrael's body)
The next portcullis opens by placing items on the pressure plates in front of each of the three gates.
AFAIK The 1-3-1 code should only open a door to a room in the crypt (on the same level).

Is he the explorer, zombie hunter, with the book on him? If so, I can't open the portcullios just infront of him.

Yes, that's him.
Nice detail, IMO, is that in the Yellow Tulip bar on level 1, one of the drunks is continually muttering against himself that he hasn't seen Azreal Darkthorn for quite some time.. ..and now you find his body : )
