Nowadays games are technically improved obviously, but, Thief, Deus Ex and System Shock had a certain something, character, atmosphere, gameplay, which many games nowadays lack. And i hate that holding hands of modern games. In Fallout 4, you immediately get a companion, when you hardly entered the game. And instead of exploring the game world, and what is possible in it, the game continues to hold your hand and explains you everything you can do, like dealing with a child. And many of the things you can do in the games rather feel like occupational therapy, like in MMORPG's. instead of really focusing on a few, deep things you could do. Quantity, not quality. Anyway, maybe Fallout 4 was the wrong example, because i didn't find that to be half bad, but, just look at games like Far Cry, or Assassins Creed.

How did you like TDS? Just wondering, because, for me, it isn't half as bad as some of the Thief community always claim. Think i played it through like 3 times now, and it's still fun, especially, because the atmosphere is so dense with Brosius' soundtrack, which, IMO, is the best of the 3 Thief parts (excluding the newer reboot, which didn't have Brosius' music, obviously). Of course, part 1 and 2 ARE better, but, still, TDS really has a certain something.
I don't think people found TDS bad as much as disappointing. Even if it's the worst Thief game it's still worthy of being called a Thief game and that's a pretty high bar to reach.

TDS is not the worst game, it's just not the best, imo. When I was 10-years old kid and I first saw the Thief 3 it just freaked me out, I simply couldn't find the words to describe what I feel. Even when you first come out of Garrett's house in South Quarter and look around yourself, it feels so scary and exciting at once, dark blue colors, gothic rooftops and ambient sounds hypnotizes you to delve deep into this awesome magical world. And you even didn't need a weed to feel so deep! God I wish I was a kid once again .

That's what i mean. :) The first Thief game i played, must have been like 2004 or so, was Thief - The Dark Project. I must admit that i even stopped playing it after a couple of levels, because it didn't quite catch me at that time, as i was into other games. But, then i played Deadly Shadows a couple of years after that, and, it really caught me. The atmosphere, the soundtrack, the gameplay, about everything about it. It may partly be my nostalgic feelings about it, but, for me, it's far from being a bad game, or a bad Thief. But, there are downsides too, of course, especially the limitations of the levels is a bummer for me. I don't have that much of an issue with the character movement though, not sure why that always had been such a big topic. Yes, the character slides when you peek left or right, but, nothing you can't get used to. Anyway, each to his like.

Well, it's the worst game in the series. Doesn't make it a bad game -- both of the other Thief games are hard to surpass in the first place.

I really enjoyed it too, I found the same thing with the atmosphere in T:DS as well, it has a lot of the hallmarks that make a thief game minus a couple of things of course. I know it gets a lot of flack from the community but I think it really wraps up the thief trilogy nicely in terms of story. The controls were clunky sure and yeah it had no rope arrows or weather even but it definitely had that thief charm and good use of the factions, voice acting, a fantastic soundtrack, interesting and familiar locations to explore (even if they were limited by the xbox port, which Thief: DS Gold seems to fix a lot of) and unique experiences like the cradle and Moira's mansion.

I still like TDS. It's imperfect, but still totally recommendable to Thief fans.

I have yet to find something that can replicate Thief 1 and 2, especially my experience of playing them for the first time in 2004-2005. My god. I remember playing Thief on a Saturday and not realizing I had played all day. I remember playing it as a Quake-esque shooter, hacking away at everything, lol. I will never forget playing that first mission... not to mention the bone hoard.
I've become more accustomed to better graphics over the years, unfortunately, but the HD patches help a lot...nothing can top the atmosphere and gameplay, though. I just don't see this in modern games. E.g., the sneaking in the new Deus Ex was paltry compared to the original. At least we have the Dark Mod.

I'm a grizzled old gamer, the first game I clearly remember playing and completing was Adventure on the Atari 2600. That said, I am not so old that I'm unwilling to try something new. I have 3 kids now, and I am introducing them to the world of Thief. My eldest was born in 2006 and to quote him "It's not GTA5, but I like it". Not sure how good of an endorsement that is, but there you go.
Me personally, stealth play has always held a prominent place in my gameplay. Whether a Rogue class in Tabletop D&D, Sniping in Counter Strike or Dropping a grenade into a Super Mutants pocket in Fallout 4. And to me, Thief: The Dark Project and its sequels is still the epitome of all things Stealth.
So, am I 'stuck' in the classic generation? No, but I do love me some good gameplay....Old or New!
