Now that our beloved game is 18 years old and many of us are or/and feel a little more up in years, I have to ask: is this community just a cult of grumpy, nostalgic old Taffers? Are there any young people here, someone who was born after, let's say, TMA or DS?
If not, are you instructing your children in the ancient sacred arts of Thief? (because you should)

You're talking to one, right now

As I have heard, Thief has a decent-sized following on 4chan, whose user base tends to be youngish instead of ancient and out of touch.
But why worry? As the quote from another classic game goes, "Old men (...) are the future."

I was born in the year when TMA was released, go figure!

TBH, i don't think the games are so hip among the younger people. Graphics suck too much, and the gameplay is too boring. Fair enough, i don't like the new games so much either.

I've only been around since a little while before TDP was released. I've tried to spread the Thief games around my contemporaries, but it's rarely if ever stuck. I think one of the main reasons for people avoiding and/or dropping it is their lack of patience, which doesn't translate well to a good first impression of Thief.

Well I don't have children yet, but surely they'll be taught in the ways of old Thief :thumb:. Of course I won't push them into it, just show some thing or another. It's not in our power to force the youngest to love anything, I think the people who already have children would likely agree on that, wouldn't they?

I was a young kid when Thief: The Dark Project came out, but luckily I had parents who let me play it (my Dad introduced me to Doom 2). I remember the cool triangle box the game came in (I still sort of miss those old big boxes) and being amazed by the fact that you could enter into buildings multiple ways, I was too young to understand the deep lore involved in the game (which I rediscovered when I played the game as I got older).
Even though I play a large variety of modern and old games I still find myself going back and playing any of the original trilogy, just recently I finished a playthrough of Thief: Deadly Shadows for example and Thief 2 as well. Thinking about giving Thief: Gold a spin with Bentraxx's HD mod (last I played it was only the base graphics) so it'll be like a whole new experience visually.
Also there are teenagers now days who play the old mario games and zelda and fall in love with series, yeah the mainstream goes in a different direction but there are still many people willing to expand their tastes. I'm a little jealous in a way because there are a new generation who get to discover these games for the first time and the magic they share as well.
If I ever have children I will definitely show them the thief games to see if they take a liking to it. I hope they do but like Sadovnik said I won't force it on them.

How did you like TDS? Just wondering, because, for me, it isn't half as bad as some of the Thief community always claim. Think i played it through like 3 times now, and it's still fun, especially, because the atmosphere is so dense with Brosius' soundtrack, which, IMO, is the best of the 3 Thief parts (excluding the newer reboot, which didn't have Brosius' music, obviously). Of course, part 1 and 2 ARE better, but, still, TDS really has a certain something.

What is the best way to introduce someone to Thief these days?
Back in the day I used to let friends borrow Thief 2, as that had a pretty good tutorial level and didn't require you to do any modding or mess with keybinds. If they liked it they would tend to discover TG and either love or hate the creature feature missions.
I think it's safe to say at this point these games, much like classic bands, will never be topped - SS2 / Deus Ex included! I would love to be wrong though!
