I've just got my Redoran Stronghold today and I'm quite impressed with the place after the criticism I've heard from some people about how 'small' everything is. I think the stronghold is great and all the candle lighting really gives it a medieval atmosphere.
A couple of questions though -
1. I've talked to all the people in my stronghold and about two of them offer to train me however I don't believe I've encountered anyone who offers bartering or repair as an option. I'm sure I should be offered some services like this - will these people offer services after I upgrade or have I missed them?
2. When your stronghold is upgraded does it increase in size? Do you get more rooms? What about outside - do you get some huts and little houses?
I presume you must get some little huts when you upgrade because of the unusually flat ground surrounding my (Redoran) stronghold. Also the hetman describes by stronghold as a settlement and that to me suggests more than one building...
3. I'm currently a kinsman in the Redoran Great House and I realise that your strongholds current state is directly related to your rank in the house. My question is whether or not at my current rank I can continue on and hire some guards for my stronghold or whether I have to progress before I'm given the ability to hire guards.
4. I've heard rumours about a quest involving finding some wives for your stronghold/settlements men. What effect does this quest have on your stronghold? Will you just have more people wandering around your stronghold or do you get some surrounding village huts being created to house these new ‘couples'?
Thanks very much for your time. :)

I joined House Hlaalu, so I can only speak from that perspective. It should be pretty much the same deal though.

When you upgrade your stronghold, more people will come with it. They should offer different services.

With the Hlaalu stronghold, all upgrades occurred outside. The building that was there first remained the same while new ones sprouted up outside. A wall and a tower was put up first (plus one occupant in the tower). Then came another house with one or two more people.

I'm not sure if this is entirely correct. I do believe I got all upgrades to my stronghold while I was house father.
One of the upgrade quests involved me hiring a guard and either taking him to clear out some bandits (which costs gold as long as he's with you) or posting him up at my stronghold. I chose to leave him behind. He just stands in one spot right outside my stronghold now. I would have liked more guards.
According to the contractor, my stronghold is complete.
I don't know if there any other upgrades to be had otherwise.
Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks very much for replying Sinister Handed to be honest I feel lucky if I get a reply within 12 hours so your post was very unexpected.
Your post explains a few things and backs up what I thought - your stronghold isn't just one building but a mini settlement with many structures.
Like you said i get the impression that quite a few little hurts/yerts/houses will spring up and hopefully some sort of fortified wall (its a stronghold after all not a country manor).
I've just completed the Redoran quest to employ some guards to man my stronghold. After I completed the quest I went back to the woman I usually talk to about my stronghold and she said that she would give the orders for the second stage of development. :)
As for how many times you can advance a stronghold I'm unsure; from the guide I printed from a web site I get the impression you can upgrade the Redoran stronghold twice the first being the 'guard' upgrade and the second being the 'wives' upgrade. I could be wrong with my assumption though but I do know that the quest to find your men some wives exists.
The quest I had to complete to get some guards required me to release a woman from the prison cells of the Hlaalu canton in vivec. The woman was a friend of the head of Ald'ruhn's fighter's guild and he had promised me some guards on her release. Anyway I managed to magically pick the cell lock without the ordinator seeing me but as soon as the woman and me tried to escape he attacked me. Anyway at level 5 i was a bit worried at the ordinator attacking me so I paralysed him for 30 seconds with a scroll and then hacked him to death. At that point i thought i'd done something wrong but my bounty was still on zero. Anyway after the woman said she could make her own way back outside the prison i went back to the dead ordinator took all of his indoril armour and ebony mace and recalled home.
I suppose my question is why didn't I get reported? I've checked with other ordinators and they don't acknowledge I've done anything wrong and my bounty is still on zero - I suppose the indoril armour and ebony weapon is a kind of reward.
Anyway thanks for your help. :)

I've experienced this myself, when taking out the nice, but in-the-way female guard/trainer in the evidence room of Fort MoonMoth. I attacked and killed her by surprise, slaying her in one hit. I think that if you take out a guard before he/she has a chance to "Yell for help" as it were, you can literally get away with murder.

Red: I believe it's because they atacked you rather than vice-versa (and of course not because you wore the indoril in Vivec). It's similar to a Legion quest wherein two Ordinators attack you, and noone cares.
VetMichael: That was supposed to've been fixed in the patch. I noticed that people you kill still hop into a fighting pose and shout, even if you do a critical one-shot-kills-them blow.
