In Melbourne, Napier Street can either be associated with post-bohemian inner city urbanalism if one is living in Fitzroy, or if one is living in Footscray, a place to buy smack.
Melbourne seems to have a catalogue of about twenty street names that are recycled endlessly. The same names pop up on major streets and minor back roads all across the city.

I can say that Coombe Road probably comes from Old English "cumb" meaning a valley (usually relatively short).
This is not definite at all but comes from common place name elements listed in the Oxford Dictionary of English Place Names.
Thats actually quite interesting... it's been 10yrs since I lived in Brixham, S.Devon, but I'm sure there was a place called "Coombe Valley" (or am I thinking of somewhere else? )
Anyway, there were definately lots of "Combe" places... Babacombe (if I've spelt that right) for example, and plenty of road names that incorperate it in some form or other.
As Torbay (the collective area of Brixham, Churston, Paignton & Torquay in the county of S.Devon) is essentially 1 big valley that ends in the bay itself then I'd say you're bang on the money about "coombe" coming from "cumb" and the original meaning of that word.
*sorry to double post, server lag or something*
*EDIT* Back on topic, in S.Yorkshire we have "Skidmore Close" for a bad example, but most street names tend to be "pretty"... perhaps to pretend it's not as run-down as it is. There is little "traditional" where I live, but it's a mining town that was built around the turn of the century, and since went in to recline after the reign of Margret "industry killer" Thatcher.

I've heard it's not uncommon for there to be places named after a few different language's versions of the same idea. That is (for example) the Celts call a place David's Coombe - David's Valley. Then the Angles come along and think "Well, it's called David's Coombe, but we know it as a valley, so let's call it Davidscoombe Valley" and the place now means David's Valley Valley! I think it's interesting, anyway.
Also, I've visited Brixham a few times, it's a really nice place :)

This is slightly backwards, as it's an old street name that became interesting, but about 100 yards from the back of St John's College, Cambridge, is a street called Magrath Avenue. Douglas Adams went to John's, and later includes the planet Magrathea in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This is, I presume, not a coincidence. I came across it a few years ago when I discovered Multimap and I was checking out my environs.

Cheers for that, I couldn't actually remember how to do it!:o
I wouldn't necessalarly(?) call Brixham a
really nice place but it's better than where I live now! Recently caught up with old friends on friendsreunited so will be travelling back down at some point, and will now be boaring the hell out of my misses with "interesting" useless information about the origin of the place names!:cheeky:

Back at my grandparents town, there was one street that caught my eye. "Hooker street". *giggles like an idiot* Lol, hooker.
