Well that makes it okay then.

If the stream is smart enough (and it doesn't have to be all that smart to do this), it might very well open a socket straight from the input device to the output device. Really, it's hard to imagine why you
wouldn't.Quote Posted by ZylonBane
Considering that some monitors are considered unsuitable for gaming due to lag displaying the signal being fed directly to them...
Eh, so what? TVs (and monitors that act like TVs) routinely have lags of several frames in standard mode, because they want to look ahead in the signal.

That's what the gaming mode on TVs is for. In any case, local streaming should be about tolerable as long as you're not playing something that demands twitch reflexes.
The original point of this thread was PS Now and its ilk, which have proved to be disappointing and remain so: not really surprising, because there's only so much you can do if the server's half a continent away.

Just tried out PS4's Remote Play feature, which uploads a videostream from my PS4 to THE NET and then downloads it back down again into my computer in the next room.
...
Yeeeeeah I told you all Streaming Gaming was gonna take off when I was Nostradamusing up the place two years ago but all you NAYSAYERS called me CRAZY! How does it feel now? Want some bacon to go with all that egg on your face? Bon Apetit, enjoy your breakfast you dummies!
Anyway, image quality wasn't as good as on the PS4, but input lag was practically imperceptible. I couldn't really feel a difference from playing The Order on my PS4 yesterday and playing it remotely on the PC today. That said, while this is neat and all I don't really have a practical use for it. I guess it might come in handy if I wanna play my PS4 games when I'm away from home, but that won't happen too often.
Anyway, I'm considering getting one of those
Steam Links, as playing PC games on the TV
is something I might have use for. Especially since I just ordered a Steam Controller, and Dark Souls 3 which is the kinda game I'd rather be playing on the TV. Anyone try this Steam Link thingy out yet? How is it?
I must have been living under rock as I only just discovered the PS4 Remote Play feature. While it's quite ok and a nice novel experience to finally be able to play BloodBorne on my PC, the picture quality is noticeably worse given that the video resolution maxes out at 540 for the standard PS4.
The Steamlink on the other hand outputs at 1080P and looks gorgeous on the big screen, at least when playing through a wired connection (via powerline); wireless was just ok for simple games but had noticeable performance issues for almost anything else. Many of the games in my library also look and play much better on a big screen, such as Subnautica, The Long Dark, Pinball FX, Sega All Stars racing and the first Batman game to name a few. One strange thing I've noticed though is that it doesn't seem to record achievements on the Friend's Activity page, which doesn't really matter but is odd nevertheless.

Are you sure about that? Everything I've read says it's 720p, with 1080p being reserved for PS4 Pro.

Yep, you're right -- just checked -- but it is noticeably poorer as far as picture quality is concerned. It's probably not much of an issue for older or less cutting edge games and it plays pretty much the same performance-wise, just not sure why they have to send so much of the data over the internet, considering Steam appears to do the bare minimum

I think you're all lazy, horrible people. If you were really cool, you'd man up, buy a 100ft HDMI cable, and drill holes throughout your house to run the HDMI cable through.
I had to clarify that last bit, because I don't want any of you drilling holes throughout your house without a specific reason.
Trance on 5/2/2017 at 17:49
Well shit, wish I'd read all the way to the end first.
Renzatic on 5/2/2017 at 18:49
Yeah, well, that's what you get.

It's still not going to work well for most online enabled games.
That said, I see companies pushing trying to make this idea become a big league trend. Corporate America are, as a group, extreme control freaks(hence their politics), and given how easy it is to blame "piracy" rather than your own incompetence for a failed release gaming is an extreme example to the rule rather than exception
It's the same reason they pushed TPM. Having all game data located on a server that they physically control and can shut you out of at any time means that they also have complete control over everything that people do with the game. They also know that said control is valuable: see the modern DLC microtransaction mode vs. what "DLC" as like for games like the original Unreal Tournament.
