Ok, here it is:
In both the Ultima Underworlds I am unable to strafe correctly. When im facing certain directions it works fine, but if I turn to the side or something then I start to strafe at an odd angle and really slow.
I first played UW on my old 486 DX66, and it worked perfectly. But this problem first cropped up when I upgraded to a newer computer.
What prompted me to post this is that just today I installed an old game called Daggerfall, also an excellent game I used to play perfectly with my 486. Then to my surprise I tried to strafe and the same thing happend that happens in UW.
This sucks, I want to play my GOOD games! (Havent played a game that comes close to UW in a while)
Has anyone had this problem? Got any fixes? Thanks in advance for the help.
System specs:
ABIT KA7
Athlon 1400
SB Live!
GeForce 2MX
256MB RAM
Problem occurs in Win98 and DOS.

This seems to happen in my game as well, actually... Backing up is very slow and strafing mostly painfully so. However, I just sort of assumed this was the way it was supposed to be (it might have been my imagination, but it seemed like I got slowerwith weight encumbrance). Still, maybe it is a bug to do with our computers... any confirmation?

Yeah, I've had the same problem, and as far as I can tell, it's the same issue that appears when swimming. It appears to be dependant on processor speed, so a fast processor causes you to strafe really slowly (or swim really slowly). I guess you can try Moslo, but it's not really *that* big a deal, as strafing isn't an essential part of the UW playing experience.

One way around this is that when you want to swim, back up, or strafe, you can press the "shift" key while doing so. It looks odd, but it will move you substantially faster than just swimming or strafing alone.

It's been suggested that this is a problem with AMD processors; can anybody with a recent Intel processor verify that it DOESN'T affect them?

Well I had this same problem while using a Celeron 600. So I dont think that it's just AMD.
I tried UW earlyer and noticed that backing up is horribly slow also. I am also unable to run in Daggerfall and climbing doesnt work either.
I will try Moslo and see if it helps either UW or Daggerfall.

Ok, I just whent and downloaded the latest evaluation version of Moslo.
For UW I tried my processor at 1% and 5% of its actual speed, the game still ran like it was before and I still had the strafe preblems. However in Daggerfall I set it to 5% of actual speed and it worked! I was able to strafe perfectly and could also run.
I think the reason UW did not work is because it has so low of requirements that I will have to specify less than 1% something I cant do in the evaluation version.
Im gonna search on download.com for an alternate slow down program I can try.

I've found that on faster machines if you go just under the maximum reverse speed then you go as fast as you do at maximum speed on slower machines. It's not instinctive, but it works for me!

Huh?
