WHAAAAAAAAAT
As it happens I was JUST THE OTHER DAY watching this quite good retro review of Strife, by Ross's Game Dungeon(better known as the Freeman's Mind guy).

Yeah I remember playing the demo of this back then and having my mind blow by the fact that there were people in it who weren't trying to kill you on sight.

This is... not entirely what I expected.
Impressions after 114 minutes with the game
Of course I played the Kickstarter demo, yet I've been keeping myself in the dark on what form the final product would actually take. I was expecting something along the lines of the new DOOM, but what I played tonight felt much more like a first person Teleglitch. It's permadeath! It's difficult! And it has somewhat-procedurally generated levels. For instance the levels in the first chapter always consists of the same rooms, but the order of these rooms and how they connect to eachother, as well as enemy positions varies on each playthrough. Along the way you find scrap with which to purchase health-packs, ammo and upgrades(like double-jump boots).
Unlike DOOM there's not much incentive for aggressive playing, instead if you want to make your health last to see you into the next level you're better off playing defensively. There's a lot of staying back and sniping at enemies charging at you down a corridor. There's still plenty of strafing and jumping around to evade enemies, but mostly just to get out of harms way and put some distance between the pack and yourself. At least this has been my experience in the first of the game's four 3-level chapters. After my last and most successful run I finally made it to 2-1, the second chapter, and this one seems to be much more open than the tight corridors of the first. Might end up changing how the game plays quite a bit.
I'm kinda itching to get back into it and see how far I can get this time, but it's getting late and I really should hit the hay.
Aww hell, just one more run.

Hmmm, game currently runs like shit, going to update my graphics card drivers. Not exactly the best first experience.

Well that sucks, I see on the Steam forums plenty of people are having performance issues. :erg:
MEANWHILE
Apparently the game has already sold well enough that the inveitable feature film has already been produced and is heading for theatres. Here's the trailer.

Seriously, bless this game's marketing. <3
