I figured I'd go back & give the Imperials a try, even though I usually root for the underdog. I was a little disappointed with the outcome of joining the Stormcloaks, so why not, right? I was kind of hoping that there'd be a face-off with the Thalmor at the end of Skyrim, but I think Genshi's right & Bethesda's saving that battle for the next TES installment. Oh well; something to look forward to.

Since my character is an imperial, I naturally sided with them. Haven't delved very deep into the quest line yet, though.

Good points, I like the Stormcloaks,. because it resembles the USA, where foreigners (I will not say name) are pouring in from the south only for money, but they hate our us and our land, and want to change things to make it easy for them. And are also called racist for not wanting our land raped.
Everyone smacked a racist sticker one someone they don't like. who are patriotic and want to defend their lands.
At the same time Olfric is kind of a traitor. and the imperials have many nords. But it is not about race, it is about defending your land from foreign change. So Stormcloks get my vote.
No guy, you're called a racist because you are one. Durka Durka hillbilly. Patriotic who wants to defend their lands? That's just weird. Grow a clue. Why don't you get your AR-15 and go invade Iran like I'm sure you're calling Obama a coward for not doing.

I haven't joined either faction yet, only because they're
both douchebag factions imo. On one hand you've got the Imperials who've already tried to serve my head to me on a silver platter, have outlawed the worship of Talos, and who've welcomed the Thalmor with open arms (now
there's a group I love to hate) who, btw, will cheerfully carry out the death sentence for those caught worshipping Talos.
In order: yes, no, yes and no, no and yes.
Imperials wanted to kill you. Yeah, big deal, you were in the wrong place at a wrong time and considering they had the leader of the rebellion in hand and war as good as won if only he was executed, you were a small price to pay. Plus it was only the Captain Bitch who wanted you dead, I guess it would be too much paperwork to deal with you.Tullius doesn't seem to give a fuck either way and Hadvar is sympathetic. Nothing you can do about dicks in charge.
Yes, Empire outlawed worship of Talos but until Ulfric started causing racket nobody really cared. Alvor himself says that "it wasn't a big deal when I was a kid" and that "everyone still had a little shrine to Talos". But then of course Ulfric arrived, made a lot of ruckus and Thalmor had to take interest in it personally. Basically what Phatose said.
If you think the Empire(or is that Imperium? I'm getting 40k mixed up in this) "welcomed Thalmor with open arms" well then I guess you must've missed the entire (
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:The_Great_War_%28book%29) Great War part of lore.
For me Empire is a pretty safe choice, as that's the only thing that can stand up to a Dominion. Well that and Redguards apparently.

I don't like playing it 'safe', so I went ahead & joined the Stormcloaks. As much as I dearly love this game I was sorely disappointed that during the battles there were only a handful of Stormcloak soldiers to aid me; I guess I was expecting more (maybe a cast of hundreds ... or even at least 15 to 20?). I also wish the devs would've continued the storyline of Ulfric's victory (don't know yet what the outcome is if you join the Imperial forces) and actually staged the 'moot' Ulfric's waiting for to determine whether or not he'll be crowned high king of Skyrim.
Overall I've seen no difference between the Stormcloak soldiers patrolling the towns & villages and the Imperials when they were doing the same; except the Stormcloaks don't seem to be actively seeking out Imperial soldiers and executing them the way the Imperials did at the beginning of the game. Even though after the last battle Ulfric tells you it's okay to continue fighting against any of the remaining Imperial military, you don't really get any active quests to do so. In any Imperial camps you attack (after Ulfric's win) you'll find the soldiers aren't that hard to defeat, but the game won't allow you to kill their commander, no matter how hard you try - don't know if that's a glitch or not.
I also find it a bit odd that even after Ulfric's victory I still run into Imperial soldiers (always in groups of three) leading a bound Stormcloak soldier prisoner - though where they think they're leading him to is beyond me. Maybe I'll follow them next time I run across them just to see where they're headed. It also seems to me that there are more supporters of Ulfric in Skyrim than the Imperials would have you believe, and believe me, I feel as though I've talked to just about every NPC in the damned game. Chatty bunch.
Next time around I think I'll join the Imperials just to see if that arc is more impressive in any way. And no, I never got around to reading The Great War lore, but thanks for the link.
Koki on 10/1/2012 at 13:58
I didn't touch either in my game yet, but I'm fairly sure it's 100% identical. Even the cities you attack are same(except for the capital and the order of course).

"Talos, once known as Tiber Septim, Ysmir, or the Dragonborn, Heir to the Seat of Sundered Kings, is the greatest hero-god of Mankind, and worshipped as the protector and patron of just rulership and civil society. Tiber Septim conquered all of Tamriel and ushered in the Third Era and the Third Empire. At his death he ascended to godhood as the God of War and Governance of the Nine Divines. Less prominent sects, such as the Talos Cult have been inspired by his apotheosis". (The Elder Scrolls Wiki).
Talos was an Imperial General, Tiber Septim, he commanded the army and navy of Cyrodiil through a number of victories or stalemates, slowly bringing the independent states of Tamriel under the umbrella of Imperial Provinces. Talos' own emperor was assassinated in 2E 854, leaving the Elder Council in charge of the government and, effectively, putting Tiber Septim in charge of the Empire. He continued to press his attacks across Tamriel, until in 2E 896, he enacts a truce between Cyrodiil and Morrowind to bring the Dunmer province into the Empire as a mostly independent province, in return for the aid of the golem Numidium in defeating the rest of the continent.
The Stormcloak rebellion does not concern in a fight for the Nords and their people, Ulfric only used the riidiculous White-Gold Concordat as an excuse for his personal plans. In my country I've seen a lot of "veiled-racism" (I'm brazilian), the segregation (social or racial) exists in the entire World - even in a ficticious game. The Gray Quarters is a case of xenofobism - but the Nords of Windhelm only avoid the area due to the increased presence of the Aldmeri Dominion in Tamriel. Elves are elves - and they hate Elves.
In other way, we can notify that the Stormcloaks (not all, but a lot of then) are racists - they think that all the other races are inferior to the Nords.
Another incidents, like the Markarth's case show us that the people of Skyrim constantly fights each other to conquer Lands - and all of these people will always reclaim the Lands like "their lands".
Choose a side in this ocasions is impossible.
Genshi on 24/1/2012 at 14:52
If you play the main quest to the time you infiltrate the Thalmor Embassy, there is a dossier about Ulfric that states he is....A SLEEPER AGENT OF THE THALMOR!!!!They manipulated him back in the great war so that he would eventually create a rebbelion to weaken the empire... That dossier also states that neither side must win, they just want to sit back until both sides die out, and they can continue theire conquest
Dia on 24/1/2012 at 15:05
Whoa. I missed that dossier! Now I'm compelled to go back & re-infiltrate that Embassy just to find that document. I do wonder however, what happens if I start the game over and don't choose sides, would there still be battles (and battlescenes) between the Stormcloaks & Imperial forces that I would be privy to witness?
Thanks for sharing that info, Genshi.
Koki on 24/1/2012 at 15:23
Ulfric
is NOT an Aldmeri sleeper agent. The dossier classifies him as "Asset (uncooperative)". He is an asset because some of his goals conincide with Aldmeri Dominion's(civil war = weakened Empire). But that doesn't mean he is cooperating with the Dominion, in fact the "uncooperative" tag states the exact opposite.
@Dia: if you don't take part in civil war, nothing happens. No battles, no front shifting, just the usual random spawn of Imperial soldiers fighting Stormcloak soldiers.
