And here I hoped you understand me. :(
Hey, I have no problems with you trying to give some details on the background of the different versions; although I'm quite familiar with a lot of the production fuck ups during the filming of Alien 3 myself, I did not know all of what you posted earlier. So thank you for that.
But let's be honest, whether the re-cut edition should be called 'Assembly Cut', 'Special Edition' or whatever else is ultimately not really relevant to the point I was trying to make*, no?
* To reiterate: Enchantermon, watch the re-cut version of Alien 3; it's much improved on the theatrical release.

Well, no, it has nothing to do with your original point. I just wanted to point out the distinction. Because "Special Edition" usually rings in ears of common audience "wow, this must be something newly constructed, probably the director has reconsidered his vision after so many years". While in fact it's basically an old thing, digitally restored.

I would say that in that case the phrase 'Director's Cut' is usually specifically used.
N'Al on 13/5/2009 at 13:10
So, that's that sorted then.
Hugs 'n kisses 'n bumsex, everyone?

All right, but you're bottoming buying.

I agree these "cut" names can be pretty confusing. After principal photography, the dir and supervising editor make the first rough cuts of the film, such edits use to be called "first director's cut" or "assembly cut," before the director assembles a "fine cut" of the picture, which goes to sneak previews (and subsequently it can be perverted by the studio, if it hasn't been already). But the term DC is also applied to edits, which the director makes years after the original theatrical release without artistic limitations from producers or the studio. Perhaps DC can be rightfully applied only to edits, which the director worked on personally, and it appears that Fincher hadn't much to do *personally* with restoration of his original A3 version.
But perhaps this makes things a bit more clear :

(I'm fairly sure they refer to "Assembly Cut" somewhere in Quadrilogy's supplemental documentaries as well.)

If this is what you consider a flame war you clearly haven't been at TTLG long enough.
That's why I put "debate" first. The flamewar ETA is 2 more pages.
