Still at it, reactor level now, doing the mining laser thing... Damn but aren't those bloody hoppers an annoying waste of ammo.
I'm awfully fond of taking the one on the Med level out with an adrenaline patch and my lead pipe, but it's easy to get the jump on that one. Not these damn reactor level respawners.
Can't wait to get through this bit... must... get... Laser Rapier.

The laser rapier kicks asses, simply put.

pheeeww Finally completed it! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
I wish I could take a screen of the stats, anyway here they are:
Time: 12:23:45
Kills: 788
Regen: 101
Difficulty: 26
Score: 1826775
How is that for a first time? :erm: What kind of numbers did you guys get in your first goes? What kind of things contribute to the score? Also, how is that difficulty index calculated? I've already forgotten exactly what settings I chose in the beginning, I think I put everything max except for the game time limit.
I think this is the game I've had the most extreme love-hate relationship with ever; while I absolutely loved the experience all the way through, the controls were quite frustrating considering it's an action game, and on top of that there were frequent inexplicable crashes to the desktop. I'm still buzzing from it, though, I would play large chunks in one go so I'm still taking in all that I've seen and my thoughts aren't all quite together yet.
I still think SS2 is a better game, but there's so much to the first game that I think really must have gone over people's heads at the time it came out - it most definitely was a game ahead of its time in terms of both design and technology. In fact, as much as I dread certain parts, I'm feeling an overwhelming urge to jump right back in and start over again, because the basic gameplay is just damn good despite the controls. I'm not quite sure what could be an improvement, I think it's just mainly the cumbersome turning that got to me more than anything, as well as the fiddly keyboard layout.
What irritates me about this game, which is also an issue with SS2, is how I always tend to play it: extremely conservatively - eg. I used a melee weapon for the majority of the game despite the abundance of gun ammo. The lasier rapier is remarkably effective against all enemies if you can survive the close range, so I used that for the whole game, using a gun when I was out of power and didn't have batteries on me. The fact that power chargers were usually very easy to get to on most levels meant I could use it most of the time without worry. Another thing is how little I'd use the other items like healing patches and first aid kits, and also some of the other patches; I still have no idea what difference a few of those patches make to the gameplay. I guess now that I know what the game is like and how much fucking stuff I end up with in the end, I can play it again a little more at ease. Or maybe I should go for the time-limited game :ebil: . Any comments on that difficulty level? Who's completed it within that time?
All in all, a frickin' awesome game; my POS computer can't play any of the latest games that are out now, so it was just great to be able to really enjoy a new experience.

i discovered the plasma rifle for the first time the other day. dunno how the hell i missed it the 7 or 8 times beforehand.
... it was my new girlfriend. i took out the bot repair room in about 2 minutes where i would ordinarily need close to 10 out of caution.

The problem with the plasma rifle is that half the time you have to be running away from your own shots :p

that's what made it so great though :cheeky:

It was powerful and self-threatening; good enough for me. :p

Ah, the bot repair room...
I save up a huge pile of grenades just for this room, then carefully and strategically place them inside in a daisy chain fashion... leave room, save game, toss in a nitropack, shut door...
BOOOOM boom bam BLAM *crunch* POW *tinkle* <silence>
I usually reload and do it again a couple times for extra fun.

I just put my System Shock disc in my computer the other night and played through the Hospital level. Ahhh... I feel like I'm back in 1994, when life was a whole lot easier :) Playing with the enemies set to the hardest difficulty is quite a challenge, where only a couple hits from a Cyborg Assassin will kill you.
This game is still my most favorite of all time.
