Shock 1, of course. I've played it through more times than I can count, but sadly, a slew of new games and shiny graphics (and mouselook) distracted me from giving it much thought since last millennium...
Well tonight, I played all the way through the Med level of Citadel. No new surprises for me to find; I still know the place like the back of my hand once I start crawling around.
But it's still... rather creepy. :erm: The interface adds to the effect, since there's no wheeling around 180 degrees in an instant to check your six. There's a lot of stopping and looking around for mutants. It's no good listening for them, they don't make a sound until they're tearing at your flesh. You're never 100% safe out in those corridors, or even your healing suite.
I'm fully cognizant of the horrors to come within the rest of Citadel... the Med level, as creepy as it is, rarely puts you in real danger of dying... or worse.
It's time for another round of SS2 as well - maybe I'll play the 2 simultaneously by alternating levels or missions. I still need to decide what type of playstyle to use for SS2... I usually approach it as a stealthy, light(ish) weapon wielding tech expert.
And maybe that's why the 2nd game isn't quite as dreadful as the first - you can play it within your personal comfort zone. I confess to lacking the discipline to play SS2 in a way that doesn't give me at least a small sense of control... SS1 doesn't really give you that option.
Well, there's only one place to go from where I am... the research level. :)

I always keep the Sensaround unit on when I'm roaming the corridors of the Medical level. I'm always fearing that a mutant will spawn right behind me.

I got myself badly damaged plenty of times on Medical because of those silent mutants. But after I got to the later decks of the game, I just ran from the elevator towards the second bulkhead door that leads to the near beginning of the game where my favorite med-station is located.
Then on my way back to the elevator I can see if there are mutants waiting.

Well damn, I don't recall having this happen before... usually when I took the elevator ride to Research,
The mutant mob in the lobby would be hanging back around midroom where I could hose them with a gas grenade. Nope, I arrive at Research and immediately find that pack of mutants trying to stuff themselves inside of the elevator with me. Many Sparq blasts later, I killed them off... back to Medical to heal and recharge...
I guess I forgot about a few of those baddies' hiding places. I thought I'd cleared out the first room of Research's maintenance section, bravely marched in, and immediately found a repair bot in my face.
Been a long time since I've seen that Cortex Reaver cutscene... Ah, lovely cutscene.
Don't you just love lv 4 sensaround in the last level? I use it religiously when i'm in those mazes with the autobombs and with the robots as well.
Too bad you don't get the 3-view earlier on
I started up SS1 for the first time a few months ago, and completed about 3 levels. Shit happened, so I had to stop and only this past week picked it up again; I'm now on level 7. I've been blown away by how good it is, not that I didn't know it would be, based on it's following, but I never really liked the control scheme so never got into it properly. I still dislike the controls but I'm thoroughly, throughly enjoying the interesting plot, how similar the exploration is to its sequel, the insane difficulty of some parts (for me), the graphics (I actually really like the graphics). I hate that I still can't play the game like an FPS; just like SS2 I end up playing melee most of the time (I love me the laser rapier), I guess I am always too nervous using guns in games like this :nono: .

The last Sensaround version is v3 not v4 ;) And v2 is already quite handy for the Maintenance level, even without the expanded views.

I saw the most use with the lantern in Maintenance, saved my nightblind eyes big time.
