I remember having lots of fun when I was young with a stereogram book.
The ones I never liked where the magic eye books, with the patterns that looked like nothing and then went 3-d. I think I was likely doing them wrong, because they always looked like the inversion of what they were supposed to be, and I never got the full effect of them, but then I got the stereogram book, and everything just looked so awesome and 3d.
I've seen weird videogames and things that emulated stereograms, but they always ended up being hard on the eyes after a minute or two. (Also came across a video at a garage sale once, but it was pretty crappy, it wasn't animated, just a sequence of images designed to give you cancer from the television proximity required to view them <.<)

You were doing them wrong. With Magic Eye images you're supposed to diverge your eyes instead of crossing them.
