I thought that question had been answered: It pays well.
...and it's a way to make a living that means he doesn't have to deal with the Keepers except in times of extreme situations.

I always felt that Garrett was more or less resigned to being a thief, not having any other skills or rather recognizing the fact that he was just a good thief. Kind of just making the best of a bad situation. SR portrayed Garrett perfectly; a cynical, seasoned man who's seen pretty much the worst life has to offer and does what he does because he's not good at anything else. I don't understand how you can come to the conclusion that he enjoys being a thief, except perhaps when he almost sounds excited at the prospect of making a big heist; one that will pay his rent and allow him to eat decently for awhile.
Accusing the TDP/TMA devs for 'poor writing' is tantamount to sacrilege in these parts, you know. Where's jtr when you need him. ;) Perhaps it's your interpretation of the character, Flavia?
At this point I can only hope for NuGarrett to be re-named since he already seems like a completely different character than was created for the original three games. While they're at it, EM could very easily change the title of the game and I doubt anyone's feelings would be hurt by that act.

EM would earn a lot of respect from this community if they decided to deal with things honestly and honorably...If EM were to make the noble choice, by renaming the game, protagonist, and a few other elements to something more appropriate, they would have active community support and promotion for their new title...as they would certainly receive great thanks for not besmirching the good name of THIEF.

He was the most promising of Keeper acolytes. He was well trained - in stealth, but also combat (you DO remember swordfight and archery from T1 training, right?). And judging from Keeper's attachment to knowledge, he was also probably well educated.
With that in mind, I find it hard to believe he coudn't think of anything that wouldn't get his ass hanged.
Now, onto the character. I can think of two situation when he displays something we can call 'dislike' for his job.
First is after hearing Constantine's offer, when he says he's going to retire in style. This I discussed few posts above.
Second is when he displays contempt to amateur's job he's forced to take in order to survive in Shipping... and Receiving briefing.
Seriosly, what's the deal with this whole "standards" thing? In terms of money warehouses are the same standard as his other goals. And yet he treads them as "worse". Why?
If there are any other examples, please, point them out. Maybe there are whole conversation in which Garrett express his dislike that I somehow missed :tsktsk:
On the other hand we have:
"With so many rich countesses and lords in one place, I'll be like a kid in a candy store" from Unwelcome Guest briefing. Because kids usually have to be dragged to candy stores. You know, they have to. For... survival, I think?
"Now I know I'm a master thief—Waltzing right into a bank vault" from First City Bank and Trust. If that's not pride from job well done, then I don't know what is. And it's hard to be proud of something you don't like.
"Call it ego, but I've always wanted to tackle the Museum" from Still Life with Blackjack briefing. Again: he wants to rob the place. You usually don't want to do things you don't like.
And it's not money that drives him, it's his ego (and money).
Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think he's some sort of romantic character, who steals for fun then give his money for poor, because why not? No, he want's this money for himself - all the money, in fact, because he's one greedy bastard - but there were other ways to get it. And he chose this one. Because he wanted to. It's hardly interpretation, just simply listening what he has to say.
And now I feel like in high scool again

And there is this:
"I've never robbed a god before. It'll be a challenge." Garrett likes challenge, likes his job. I agree with Flavia.
But still, what EM do is overkill. That lines in trailers don't sound like Garrett.

Primary - yes. But not the only one.
And I just realised how well this job pays since he never seem to be able to pay his rent in time :tsktsk:
Ok, I've seen this topic discussed to death in thread you linked - and probably countless others throughout the last 15 years - so let's just agree to disagree. I think he's complex - or cryptic - enought to let us all see what we want to see. From traumatised, old man with glaring inferiority complex and no idea what to do with his life Vae and Dia are talking about (which is far more "emo" than anything EM could come up with, if you ask me :ebil: ) to arrogant bastard who steals BECAUSE HE CAN <insert evil grin here>
For me new Garrett's personallity is more about shifting focus from one motivation to another, but not necessarily throwing LGS legacy through the window and posing someone totally diffrent as Garrett. And I can live with that. It's not the worst thing that could happen. And if I'll find him doing something that real Garrett would never do, I'm just gona mentally put him in some sort of alternative universe, along with various fan-made Garretts that are still awesome, even though totally un-Garrett-like.
