I personally felt that Garrett doesn't like to admit it but has taken something of a liking to his work. He clearly feels proud of himself when he pulls something off, has a snarky attitude towards those he robs and sets himself standards by which he works. That to me says he, if begrudgingly, enjoys thievery.
I doubt he started off this way - he did it more out of necessity - the skills he learned as a Keeper are only good for thievery, or jobs which he could never get as it would be way too suspicious if people became aware of his skills. Still, he does sometimes show a desire to retire - once he has enough money. But this is constantly contrasted with levels where he states that he's been looking for excuses to rob places for a while, or that he looks forward to the challenge. It seems to me that over time it's gone from necessity to something he actively enjoys.
Which is why this new attitude would make sense to me in a sequel - I highly doubt Garrett would be comfortable to actually retire. He may think he would be, but I think he'd probably find his life to be too boring. He'd be twitchy, and start to wonder what to do with himself, until eventually he decided to start up thieving again - but this time purely for the sport.
However, this is not a sequel, so it does seem rather misplaced. This feels more like a change to Garrett's personality than a continuation of his development.

I think that pouring a bottle of fine wine into a bucket of water is nothing more than a waste of good wine.

Yes, I'm also a bit disappointed that Stephen Russell won't be voicing Garrett again (but it's hardly a dealbreaker for me either, to be honest), but it seems like EM has made their decision. If the petition helps, then yay! But if not, c'est la vie - the new guy is still pretty good and the game isn't all about SR anyway.
I very much agree. I'm a long time fan of the thief series and have played them all as well as the amazingly awesome maps created by our fellow TTLG members. We have got to be above this business where the voice actor becomes more important than the game. I, personally, thought his voice was WAY overused in Skyrim and that might have made an impact on some people. (It's pretty bad when he voices two or more characters in the same room, especially when those two people are involved with the same quest *palm to face*.)
On the other hand, his voice was very familiar and it will be different to have someone else voice Garrett; however, I'm optimistic about this game because I feel it will only serve to revive and create new interest in the Thief franchise as a whole. It's certainly not going to make me stop playing the games I've known and loved to play for over a decade.

I do not think the voice is more important for most people. It was when it was all we knew of this game. Now, however, its just a particularly glaring fault in a (seemingly) ever increasing list of faults.
I did not like SR's use in Skyrim either. He was over used, as were most other voices. Typical Elder Scrolls flaw. I do not dislike SR any less, though. The poor implementation of his voice was not his fault and I forget all about Skyrim when hearing him in Thief.

You meant this one: (

Ok, I listened to it. Terri said she
thinks Garrett doesen't even like his job - hardly a conclusive statement. And it still contradicts what I've heard from Garrett in some missions.
I think maybe he's like that grumpy old fellow, who always ramble about how much he hates this job, that it's only getting worse and after this last heist he's sooo going to retire, but at the end of the day he can't imagine himself doing anything else.
Like TriangleTooth I think that even if he did retire, he would get bored pretty quickly and start looking for opportunity to steal again.

Dan Thron was more emphatic about it, going so far as to say Garrett "doesn't like it at all.". Considering how close-knit LGS was and that Terri and Dan were key participants in the making of all three original games, I'd expect the other people involved to hold similar views on the topic. Arguing against them is sort of like disputing Captain Ahab's motivations with Herman Melville.

Garrett is the reluctant thief, doing so for the primary reason of making a living. He was born into a situation in which thievery was the practical solution to his plight, and with his natural gifts he excelled into making it his career, as he was trained to do no other thing. It's simply a matter of necessity for Garrett, sprinkled with brief moments of enjoyment, as is natural when one is successful at what they do...NuGarrett on the other hand, is a kleptomaniac and a collector of things...a different person with different motivations, with an unfamiliar voice, accent, makeup and dressing style.
The relationship between Garrett and NuGarrett is superficial...similar to that of an impostor.

Well, in this case I have no choice but to blame them for poor writing, since character they delivered is totally different than a character they made up. Or is it Mr. Russell so terrible at playing someone who hates his job?
And there's still unanswered question: if he hates thieving so much, why the hell is he doing it?!
At this point I can only hope for new Garrett to be more consistent
