it's just a slight tweak to the gameplay

(Reply from EM mod Jerion)
Just wanted to chime in here. The tension does exist, but not in the way you think it does. Because in the E3 demo jumping horizontally (across gaps) was limited to contextual spots (you go up to a spot where there's a ledge within reachable distance, the hint appears and you press the key), there's no worry about missing the leap or accidentally walking off the edge of the ledge. It should be said that accidentally pushing the "drop down" button and falling to your demise is perfectly possible though. The tension comes from being detected while doing it; if there is a guard nearby then making too much noise, leaping at an inopportune moment, vaulting into the light etc will get his attention.

Is that the sort of thing you consider to be a slight tweak?

Again, we have been gifted today with a partial gameplay experience. TDP gave us tension with the consequences of height and being detected by enemies 15 years ago.

I'll take the liberty and return to the topic.
Personally I love Mr. Russell's voice and and don't buy EM's explanation about the change, but I also don't care that much to completly disregard game based on that. Maybe because I'm more of a "FM person" so I've heard many interpretation of Garrett, from sad wannabes, through almost-russellesque to people making up their own version of a character, often having very little to do with official one. And that's fine. At the end of the day what they had to say was more important than how they said it.
And from what I've heard and read, new Garrett seems fine to me. Again: I've already seen him doing things that would make true Garrett gnash his teeth. Things like:
- carrying love letters
- being lying, abusive bastard-of-a-boyfriend
- unleashing hell
- saving the kingdom
- entering traps that are almost insulting to our intelligence
- joining City Watch
- taking Keeper's spaceship to Mars to fight Gervaisius family
As long as EM won't make Garrett do anything like that I think I'll be fine :)
Of course there seems to be some shifting in Garrett's personality - but it's not as big as some of you think. You say it's all about the money - but if it was he could as well stay with the Keepers! It's not like they were poor, their compound was dripping with gold. But he had better plans because he was thief at heart. He certainly loves this job and takes great pride in it. He calls himself "Master Thief", for
fuck's sake! And I can't believe you dont hear excitement in his voice when he does something big, like entering the bank vault or robbing thief-proof Wieldstrom Museum blind. Unlike, you know, robbing warehouse or picking pockets on Stonemarket Wayside.
So I think even in old games getting whatever he fancied without anyone to browbeat him was almost equally important to him as paying rent.
And there's still his old, cynical self which seems to be fairly intact.
Now it's up to Mr. Orzari to nail it. But I'm willing to give him a chance.
As for the look, I think (

But why the corset?! Oh, EM, why the corset?!
Which makes me wonder whether there will be any mirrors in new Thief so I can admire Garrett's sexy curves xD

Not according to Terri Brosius and Dan Thron. Not only does Garrett not love it, he doesn't even like it.

Really? So basically you're telling me that the character they invented is totally different than character they showed us? Well, that's just great... :erg:
And again: if he hates his job so much, why is he doing it? It's not like there aren't any other options...
Anyway, would you kindly show me the source of this information?

While there's more than a handful of serious issues on display in the E3 gameplay for Thief 4... for me, at least, Stephen Russell's brilliant, nuanced performance of that character would be a big selling point. This is nothing new. Obviously, I don't have any major problems with Thief: Deadly Shadows, but more than once, I've encountered someone who despised Thief 3, but felt Russell's performance as Garrett lent the game a certain credibility.
Voice acting seems like a cosmetic complaint, but it really isn't. Especially in a game as focused on audio cues as Thief is.

You may be letting your enjoyment of playing Garrett affect your perception of who the character is.
According to them, Garrett steals because he wants the money and that's where his skills lie. Source is the podcast interview featuring Brosius and Thron.

I agree Shinrazero. However, I will apologize to all my old Taffer friends here for allowing my temper as well as my distrust of EM mods to get the better of me.
Temper or not, you're still hot. :sly:

I think it may be because I never get to listen to devs comments and interviews, so I got only Garrett to speak for himself. And judging from his words and acts I find it hard to believe he doesn't like what he's doing.
It says file is corrupted :(
