Trying to do a lan game of borderlands with my friend. already did this once and it worked fine.
Now I try to open steam while not connected to the internet, it asks me if I want to start in offline mode since it can't find the network.. so I click on offline mode and it says "sorry can't find the network, your network hardware must be screwed up or something" and closes.
My password is saved, and the "do not save password information" box is UNticked like it's supposed to be.
I took my computer back downstairs and plugged it into the net, logged in. and went file >>> go offline. and it did the same thing to me. restarted steam and said "we can't find the network" and quit.
So then I tried something.. I ticked the box that says "dont save password info" and quit steam. When i restarted, it logged me in automatically.
WTF is wrong steam? I"m not going to relocate my router and modem just to play a lan game..

Same problem a while back, just bought a $14 wireless usb adapter at best buy. Gave my tower the wireless access codes and good togo. Youll see about 40% the speed of direct connection but so what if all I need to do is log in. This is all assuming you have a wireless router

I had this happen last week, there's very little sensible advise out there except reinstall the client.
But what I did was make sure Steam was closed, then right clicked run as administrator (which Steam then warns you not to do!), ticked the do not save box, rebooted.
Then the same, ran as administrator and unticked the do not save box. Rebooted and it all worked fine.

apparently this is linked to a recent steam update, and after screwing around for an hour i'd say it's also related to the new UI beta.
reinstalling steam does not help apparently, i didn't try myself but I heard so from a few forums here and there.
So what I did was I deleted my clientregistry.blob file from my steam folder which would allow me to go to offline mode. but only if I was in the UI beta. If i had the normal steam UI on, it wouldn't work.
then there is the problem with the new UI not being able to see any of your games installed while in offline mode. All it showed was one game, and it said that it was preloaded but not unlocked yet.
I guess we'll ahve to wait on valve on this one.
I just ended up taking my modem and router upstairs to the living room where we were playign and just hooked up that way.
