Yeah, Deep Silver gave another studio the job of making a Dead Island sequel. The first in a long series of boneheaded decisions regarding the handling of that franchise.

Dead Island was a lot better than I'd been led to believe it would be. I think people were disappointed after the MUCH FEELS trailer that it didn't have more narrative depth, but as a zombie whacker with exploration, I thought it held up excellently. Hell, I completed it, which puts it in the small minority of games I've played.
Dying Light galvanised the formula though.

I found Dead Island so monumentally boring that I've never managed to convince myself that I want to try Dying Light, despite the rave reviews.
Kick. Kick. Kick. Kick. Kick. Kick. Kick. Kick. Kick. Kick. Kick. Kick.

Zombies as a setting are great when they're basically an unassailable threat; the way they're used in videogames is almost universally awful.

Not just video games, D&D really set the tone for that with zombies as one of the lowest orders of cannon fodder. I once ran a D&D game where undead were by-nature unkillable ("You
can't kill them; they're already dead!"). Fun times.

axing the daily and flash deals has killed off most of the heavier discounts that you'd get in Steam sales.
For me this is the reason this is the first winter sale that I'm meh about. I've scrolled through some of the list once, and I won't be again. Atleast with the previous style, you`d be checking in every few hours to see what receives a huge discount.
Under this new one I don't really care after I've checked through some of it once.

So here's a question if anybody knows: what would happen if I bought some DLC on Steam without already owning the main game first? Obviously I know any DLC alone is useless without the game it's intended for, but what I mean is if I purchased DLC now and then bought the main game say two weeks later, do you think the DLC would all still work okay or could it throw up some problems getting things "out of order"?

How do you know you want the DLC if you don't have the game yet? :)
I'd suggest buying the DLC as a gift and keeping it in your inventory first, then redeeming it yourself after you've installed the base game.
In fact, it sounds like that's the only thing you can do - Steam isn't supposed to let you buy DLC for yourself for games that you don't already own on Steam.

I vastly prefer this format. I can look at everything that's on sale, see what on my wishlist is on sale, and give some serious thought to how likely it is that I'm going to play these games. The old sale structure added this pressure where maybe I only kind of want this game, but it's 75% off! BUT ONLY FOR THE NEXT 12 HOURS! BUY IT NOW BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE! And that's how I end up with L.A. Noire in my library and no intention to play it.
Right now I've got in my cart: Flotilla, Crypt of the Necrodancer, and Elite: Dangerous. But I'm still not sure if I'm actually going to buy them, and I have a few more days to think about it, maybe get some more cards and sell them to defray the cost a bit, and maybe add some other stuff.
