Ugh spent like half hour trying to get it working with the steam version and so far no dice ><
I started a playthrough of Quake 1 + It's expansions a few weeks ago. My advice:
* Download + setup the Darkplaces sourceport
* Get mp3/ogg versions of the soundtrack and place those in the music folder
Should be good to go from there on. There is a thread over on the steam forums on setting it up also.

Yeah, honestly all you really need to enjoy Quake nowadays is Darkplaces, transparent water, and an OGG copy of the soundtrack.

Another Steam sale done - it was a good one as far as I'm concerned. Picked up 25 new games, spent a little bit more than 100 bucks, and most stuff I got was discounted at least 75%. Highlights include:
MGS 5
Evil Within Bundle
Submerged
Hotline Miami 2
35MM
And a whole bunch of retro indie stuff, mostly stealth games, but also some good old Zelda/SNES type clones, and a couple of puzzle games. I should be set for a while now, maybe even until Deus Ex comes out late August. I did want to pick up Solus Project and Hyperlight Drifter, but the discounts for them were small in comparison, and you gotta draw the line somewhere.

Time running out saved me from more frivolous spending, but I ended up with:
- MGSV
- Mark of the Ninja
- Life is Strange
- Tomb Raider: Anniversary
- Lego Batman Collection
- Batman: Arkham City
- The Talos Principle
- Brutal Legend

I got the missing Tomb Raider games (AoD, Legend, Anniversary, Underworld), so now I have all except Rise. I'm currently playing the fourth game, so this'll hold me over for a while. :)

I only bought Rise of the Tomb Raider and DOOM. I will be playing them shortly after I finish Uncharted 4.
Well, that's not entirely true. I re-bought a Steam copy of Ghostbusters the Video Game, because I had that on DVD and I don't really like online activation DRM on disc copies of games :|

Hey, that's my line! Though mine ends with "after I finish DX:HR: Missing Link", instead, and has "actually I also picked up the original Quake."

This is going to sound contrarian, but - I vastly prefer the pixely original Quake look to the source ports. And I mean VASTLY - it just has so much more atmosphere that way to me. The source ports kill what makes it special to me.

I'm of about the same opinion, Frog. When I play Quake, I fire up good old fashioned original Quake, ignoring the rest. The reason being is that it was designed to look the best it could considering the technology of the time. Updating it with high res textures, colored and/or realtime lighting only illustrates just how old of a game it is, drawing attention to the fact that underneath all that bling is a lot of blocky geometry.
Quake looks best in its original incarnation.

Thanks, I read the FAQs on Steam forums but they were confusing. Haven't heard of Darkplaces so will check it out, already got the soundtrack files.
