scumble, those are all great. :) Well, BL2 and Stanley I was a bit so-so on. Have you played Arkham Asylum and Saints Row 3 btw? If you haven't, I hope you're not simply passing them up for their bigger and meatier sequels, as those earlier parts are my faves in their respective series.

If you like puzzle games, then I highly recommend The Swapper and The Talos Principle. I loved Saints Row 4 too, but you should play SR3 first if you haven't. As for Borderlands 2, I say it's only really good in coop - it's super boring to play solo IMO. Can't comment on the rest.

I finally broke down and bought... Quake. The original one.
I was never into iD games in the hayday, but I played Doom a year ago and was pleasently surprised just how fun and really well designed the whole game is. And I'm in the mode for a bit of mindless-moody shooter. Hopefully the Q delivers!
How does the second or the expansions compare? I was considering getting the whole Steam Quake Pack but decided to stick to just the first for now.

They are totally different games.
Quake is a sci-fi / fantasy-horror hybrid, similar to Doom, filled with monsters and demons, and has a very similar plot to Doom.
Quake 2+ are strictly science fiction games, where you are a soldier against hostile aliens.
I played them so long ago that I can't really comment on how well the gameplay compares. I really should replay Quake 1 at some point.

Quake 2 is not connected to Quake, in fact the only connection any of the sequels have with Quake is the name. Q2 is much more story driven than Quake and it's set in an entirely seperate universe, the main reason I feel that Quake 2 is noteworthy is due to the technical advances it introduced. The expansions are more of the same (in new environments of course) with a few new toys. Also, a (

Do get one of the various engine updates for Quake, the good ones make it look noticably better.

Perhaps I'll watch some BL2 videos first. I wasn't sure about Arkham Asylum because I had a look on my sister's PS3 but we were both annoyed by too many long-winded cut scene sections. You seem to be following the Joker on his trolley for 5 minutes at the start. Maybe a bit of patience leads to better parts of the game. The assumption was that Arkham City might be better. Also not sure about Saints Row because I've not played any of them - is SR3 better?

I was looking at puzzlers for a more relaxing alternative to action, and the Talos Principle reminded me of the feel of the Myst games. The consensus seems less than enthusiastic on BL2, but it is fairly cheap in the sale.

Oh man, if you were annoyed with Arkham Asylum's 5 min intro I can only imagine how you'll feel about MGS V's intro. Both of these games however are very light on cutscenes after their intros and they are also two of the best games ever made. Asylum is the best superhero game ever made, and MGS V is the best stealth-action game ever made. Stick with them!
And imo SR3 is the series best, tho it seems most people prefer SR4.

I personally liked City better than Asylum, but both are very good games. Asylum does have an amazing sequence with Scarecrow, but the way the Asylum as a whole is sectioned off annoys me. On the other hand, the ability to roam in City makes the progression feel a lot more organic to me.

You can probably play 4 without playing 3 and still get a lot out of it, but several elements of 4 do rely quite a bit on stuff from 3. And 3 builds on the stuff from 2, which references elements from the first. As far as the tone of the games go, the first game was basically a GTA clone. SR2 took a slightly more joking aproach, while keeping a somewhat serious tone for the storyline, added some silly elements though those were mostly confined to side missions. SR3 went with the attitude of "players are going to dick around, let's give them a lot of toys" for the gameplay and provides a story that's more silly and fun than serious (but still has serious moments) mostly as a framework. SR4's story is basically "How can we top the previous game?" and the gameplay does a good job of following through, this does result in weapons being less important than in the previous games and basic cars being nearly useless.
More or less, to get the full story impact of 4 you need to have played the previous games, but 4 is a solid and fun game in its own right. Note that if you do decide to play 2 on Windows, be aware that the port is known to have several issues. The GOG version does try to fix some, but those fixes don't work for everyone. Also, the first was only a console release.

I agree the pacing of MGSV's intro was similar, but it had a pretty nurse in it, and the weirdness seemed to keep it engaging.
I've just bought Arkham City, but I might be crazy enough to buy Asylum as well before the sale closes.
Mark of the Ninja has been added to the library and it is indeed excellent. Beautiful animation, great stealth gameplay.
