I'll probably build or buy my HTPC next year, and I've been looking at the different things I should be able to do with it. One of these is Steam streaming: the PC I'll get should be good enough to handle streaming from my main gaming PC in the bedroom. (Not that I'd do that all the time, since I'm quite happy with the PS4 in our living room, but it's nice to have the option.)
Do any of you have much experience with Steam streaming? How well does it work? How good or bad is the lag/latency over a powerline home network (I get average speeds of ~350Mbit/s)?
Also, what wireless gamepads can you recommend? I don't need anything fancy, just something that works reliably. (I'm happy both with X360 controllers and Dualshock gamepads.) Would it perhaps even be possible to use one of the PS3 or PS4 gamepads I've got lying around, or would the problem be that they keep wanting to switch on the consoles?

I'm confused - are you talking about getting a 2nd PC for your TV room? Steam streaming wouldn't really be necessary then.
I bought a Steam Link and Steam Controller recently, and both work great. No lag at all on my wired network, streaming from my gaming PC that was built about 2 years ago. The controller takes a bit more getting used to, and nothing will ever replace a kb/mouse setup, but after some practice I've been able to play Fallout 4, Dying Light, and few others (including Thief of course) with almost no issues. Everything is extremely configurable so you can get the best setup with a little work (lots of options).

I am talking about a second PC for our living room - but one that's quite a bit smaller and cheaper and which doesn't have the hefty CPU and GPU. It wouldn't run anything with more than the most moderate requirements, but it should work well enough streaming content from my main gaming PC.

For the record: I'm almost done setting up my HTPC, and I got a Dualshock 4 to complement it. Thanks to DS4Windows, you can use the DS4's touchpad to emulate a mouse, which is handy. Haven't yet tested Steam home streaming, but we'll see how well that works.
