Hoping someone is able to help me here.
On Steam, when I click on a game and buy it, clicking "continue shopping" or "back" takes me back to the home screen and means I have to start trawling through the games from scratch.
Rather irritating when you are more than 3 pages into the "specials" list. If there is no way around this, then DAMN that is sopme awful design. I'd be spending more money if I didn't ragequit after 2 or 3 purchases.

If I understand you correctly then even just pressing "back" after going into the game details will return you to the default view of the home screen.
The work-around is to use a web browser rather than the steam interface. Go to store.steampowered.com and browse the list as normal. When you see a game you're interested in open it in another tab (normally ctrl+click on the game). You can review and add it if necessary and simply close the tab to go back to your game list.

Yes you understand me.
I was afraid that would be the answer. Shame, as I prefer using the client overall.
It's really poor design though, no?

Yes - it's definitely annoying. I suspect they're using AJAX to retrieve the list as you navigate through it and don't use cookies to save which tab you have selected or which page of results you're on.

It's literally costing them money on impulse buys.
