Steam just blew up. - by van HellSing

My Steam had turned all German when I logged on earlier, which was kind of unnerving. I wasn't able to check any account details or anything because things were no longer working at that point. Everything seems to be back to normal now. No strange transactions, I still have my 1,59€ in the Steam wallet, and I can see my own account details.
However, I do find it a little bit harder to trust Steam and Valve from now on, and I did already unlink my Paypal account from Steam. This will probably be a huge blow for them, especially when all this happened during the biggest sale of the year.

Whether or not the reports are true that this issue may have been a result of a technical issue rather than the work of hackers, I'm surprised that Valve haven't released some type of official statement about this. Even if they are still unsure of the cause they should have at least acknowledged the issue and let us know that they were investigating. It appears to be resolved now however I will wait until later today before I try to log in again.

Looks okay to me now, my pages are in English again.

Yeh seems normal for me, also I use a debit card rather than a credit card, so I actually have to put money in to buy any steam games.

I do use it, mostly because it's impossible to be a PC gamer and not use it these days.
Doesn't make it less odd.

I guess that means you have a separate account just for the debit card? Because normally debit cards just come straight out of your bank account.

correct.

This thread made it seem way more dramatic than it actually was.
Ok Mr cool guy who wasn't here last night to log in on Steam and see someone else's account info and then have to imagine yourself in the poorhouse because something had gone terribly wrong. I guess we're all just a bunch of DUUUUUUUMB BABBIES for getting worried about it!

While the claims of stored card/paypal data being used to buy stuff were probably false, a huge amount of data was still exposed during this incident. People's phone numbers, home addresses, e-mails and so on. And it wasn't some users" affected as Valve are likely to tell you. *Every* Steam user had access to random other users' data each time they loaded the relevant page.
Tell me this isn't a huge fuckup.

Yep. A few posts were positioned that way, in hindsight at least, but hindsight is always more comfortable than the present in terms of having to interpret a situation in real time. While there may not have been any actual information stolen, had valve taken the initiative to manage communication through the issue's resolution than this would have alleviated the need for others to fill the information gap with theories of their own; which to be fair is based on a wide range of security breaches of a number of platforms over the past few years. As far as I'm aware, Valve are yet to release an official statement.
In saying that, my only purchases during this sale have occurred post the issue so I still have a lot of faith in the platform.
