I've had that same problem too. I think though, it's just an issue with the current area's awareness status not being restored properly. So just a quickload from the same area will leave them still aware of you, but an exit to the main menu followed by a load might.
Not sure it's worth it though. Heck, might be intentional to fight the quickloading thief problem.

I personally use stealth all the time. Not neccessarily for stealth kills but just so I can always get the drop on the enemy.
That alert state load game bug thing is very annoying though, although to be honest it had made for some tense times (like the Arena)

Ive been reading this thread and registered just to point you to a stealth mod that me and another guy were working on... well, actully
he was working on it, I only contributed playtesting :joke:
Anyway, I think its a nifty mod- it makes stealth possible while trying not to nerf the AI too much, and has a kind of realistic damage sys that acts as an incentive to be sneaky- take a look at the readme to see a more detailed list of changes.
I liked it very much- it made me wanna play the game all over again- and it goes really well with darker nights mods.
You can find it here: (

And patch it here: (

If youll post here impressions I know he'll appreciate it and Ill make sure he sees it, so a fruitfull dialog might take place.
Cheers

I didn't try this mod, but I tried a couple of other stealth mods and they all had a major fault - enemies became almost absolutely blind sometimes, especially at night times, they often bumped me and still couldn't determine it was their enemy. Arena at the bar was a joke with the mods, enemies just couldn't see me somehow.

Try it, I think youll be in for a pleasant surprise and in any case its easy to install/ uninstall and should work with your saved games.
Dont forget to patch though.

There is a trick to moving silently that I picked up from playing Thief a billion times that seems to work in stalker too:
if you watch your sound meter closely, you'll notice that you only make noise when you take a step (GASP!!) so the trick is to only make HALF steps. that is to say, pulse W steadily so that you move forward without actually taking a full step and thus making noise. If that makes sense....
Its slow, and probably looks strange in third person, but it gets the job done.

Well, I need to test it, but judging by my previous tries I think enemies magically discover you anyway if you approach at about 5 meters distance to them..

Actually, I was able to get pretty close to guys using this tactic.
...The problem was I could never kill them silently quick enough to merit using the tactic.

Press RMB instead of LMB when using knife :)
PS: Erm... or LMB+RMB.

Stealth in STALKER is hard because of the buggy .ogg files. Pulling out a weapon, reloading it or switching to another weapon can give away your position.
This issue was initially resolved by the STALKER Redux mod team, but I think patch 1.0004 fixed the .ogg files as well.
I haven't try on vanilla yet, but with STALKER Redux, sneaking in the car park and picking off the bandits one by one silently is perfectly doable, as long as you go at night and equiped with a silenced weapon.
