Have researched stealth in the game a little by example of very first quest where you have to free a guy from bandits camp, and found this:
Stealth does work, but seems VERY buggy and works ok only for a single enemy or a really small group. Actually it's easier than I thought earlier after I finished the game for the first time, but much harder than in Thief f.e.
To approach enemy unnoticed you should be ABSOLUTELY silent, only then stealth works. They can hear even a slightest noise from a great distance even through walls. Therefore when you want to approach unnoticed:
- move ONLY IN CROUCHED POSITION;
- DON'T TOUCH BUSHES. Crouched or not, your touch will produce a noise;
- if you made a noise but enemy couldn't notice you, you should wait for about 10 sec or more before proceeding - eventually he'll stop to point his gun to a source of sound and will forget about it;
- use sound gauge as indicator - if it jumps even a little it means nearby enemies almost certainly noticed the sound and you should try to wait it out.
- use knife to kill silently, but be aware that enemy will hear you no matter what when you get too close to him (few meters), so be ready to make an instant kill with your knife;
- save only when you absolutely sure no one has noticed you yet;
I believe at least this first quest is considerably easier with stealth approach on hard difficulty than open gunfight. You may remove a few bandits silently in the building where they hold Shustriy approaching it from behind, then climb onto the roof and take out other bandits from there.

That's extremely difficult to accomplish. But of course, that's also quite realistic.

DON'T TOUCH BUSHES
Sit in them and shoot the clueless sods waltzing around you at spitting distance wondering why everyone drops dead ;p
Eh ive snuck up on the occasional bandit (and even on a monolith guy in a power armor, knifed him with one hit XD ) now and then but i prefer a good position (high ground, at best difficult to take from multiple sides, possibilites to pull back to another good cover) to stealth. Generally the only enemies i always try to sneak up to are zombies, with all others the risk to lurch around behind someones back only to get a point blank burst in the face is just too high.

When I try to attack the camp with Wolf's people, bandits almost always kill me along with the allies (of course if I don't quiksave/quickload every second) .
Actually, silent killing of at least 2 bandits in the camp is easy. Crouch, approach the camp from behind, avoid few bushes on the way and you should be able to take out a bandit at the fire and another one patrolling the building easily and silently. The best time is when the latter comes down and stops near the first.

I've managed to kill a few bandits without them noticing even at the crucial moment. I haven't played with the knife a lot but it seems to work approximately 50% of the time (at least on Stalker difficulty setting, I haven't tried any others so far).

The few times I have tried using bushes to confuse enemies, they always seem to be of this opinion: "Hey, I see someone there, better shoot and find out."

Works better if they dont see you getting into a bush i think because most enemies seem to like spraying your last assumed position. If you imagine a bush as a bunch of sheets with bush-texture placed on em you gotta bring one of the sheets between yourself and the enemy ya wanna hide from. Err it works, believe me :joke:
I always manage to cheese the whole military blockade at the start by hiding in one of the bushes near the trees, had like 7 guys swarming around me once. Brings up memories of Far Cry :cheeky:

Haha, bushcamper!
I tried playing stalker like a sneeker. The first camp took me hours... The silenced pistol was well... crap. So I got out Mr.knify(We go way back. I REALLY wanted to find an upgraded one). Then snuck around, but it seemed like the best idea to hide in the SE corner where the dumpster is. They kept just coming there and getting shanked before they could get off a shot. The problem is that they kept coming when I was silent like some kind of frigging radioactive psychic bandits.
I was 'sneaky' till the underground government facility when I realized 'stealth' elements are almost non-existent and unnecessary when they throw unavoidable enemies on you. Then went all terminator for the rest of the game slamming med kits like candy.
