What puny excuse for a weapon?
SP is better than the standard pistol in toe-to-toe encounters. Damage per shot is less, but with the rate of fire you can shoot the guy full of holes once you draw a bead on him ...
I once shot up an MIB who jumped me in Vanderberg using the SP while only on Trained Pistol/Mastered Rifle skill. The MIB surprised me and I had no time to switch to Assault Rifle so I placed the laser sight on him and lethimhaveit!
(And the Assualt Rifle sounded pathetic when you slienced it ...)

Rolander,
I agree. In a rate of fire vs. damage perspective, the SP has to rate very high. The AR seems to take forever to take down a M/WiB or MJ12 Commando in a direct confrontation, but the SP seems to make them pause to reconsider. After some testing, I know how many shots it takes to take out a greasel (7) and a M/WiB to the head, and I can fire them off as fast I can push the mouse1. I normally travel around with the SP or AR, and put them right next to each other in the quickslots, so that I can quickly change between them in a firefight, but really the SP seems to be the superior weapon.
As I said, originally, I thought the SP was a POS. Upon some testing, I've found it to be the best weapon in the game.
The SR is great at Mastered for taking out security devices (cameras, doors, cases/lockers, guns) and for one shotting the MJ12 commandos, but for direct confrontations, you better hope you have only one enemy and that your first shot kills them, or else you are toast.
The AR seems to fire off 5 shots at a minimum, and it takes nearly a full clip to take out an M/WiB or MJ12. I've taken out an MJ12 Commando with the SP with 4-5 headshots when they are aware of me, and two when surprised with the scope and Targetting aug (lvl 4) on.
There are so many positives about the SP;
1. Silent from the beginning.
2. Good range, not an issue until later missions when SR has silencer
3. Scoped, two shots kill beginning mission enemies (NSF)
4. Abundant supply of ammo. I rarely had less than 120 rounds available
5. Fast firing rate, semi-auto?
6. Very fast reload and a big clip (with mods)
and so on..........

sorry if this has been mentioned, but laser IS available first mission, near the back, where you can climb up crates onto the statue, theres a ramp that goes down into a area with a guard, and a generator, across the generator is the laser
