The problem is that you're talking with people who are Thief fans first and gamers second. A lot of people don't have time to play every game that is simply "good". I wanted a good THIEF game to play in my spare time. We can't put aside our biases and ignore the legacy of the franchise, and we shouldn't have to. It has Thief on it.
Once again, nobody is calling the game trash. It's shaping up to be a trash Thief game. But by other standards, it's probably going to be good. Most people admit Deadly Shadows was a great game, even if it went a little too far in its departure from the originals.

The community is just full of constant hatred and bile for the new Thief, like it's the worst thing that could have ever possibly happened. I'm just sick of the constant bashing of the new game, even when there's good news, the focus is still on whatever perceived slight you found in the phrasing of the news, and not the actual positive changes. Most of you have made up your minds to hate it, so no matter what they do to the game at this point, you refuse to keep an open mind about it, because you don't want to be wrong.

You need to remember which board you're logged on to. Of course people here are going to get riled up when they see Thief being dumbed down for the masses - what did you expect? And why should it just be accepted? That said, this isn't the only place you'll see complaints. Check out the official boards, comments on EM's Facebook and Youtube accounts, and the gaming press in general. It's not like everyone besides TTLG is super excited and optimistic for this game. There's a lot of criticism out there.
And besides a small handful of people here, I think most are still hopeful the game will be good to OK. That's why whenever any new info comes out, there's quite a bit of discussion on it. I've already stated I'm buying it no matter what, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Since you seem to hate all the negativity, why don't you tell us why you think this game looks so great? Besides the obvious graphical upgrade to the series, what things have you seen that really gets you optimistic that this title will be a great game, GOTY, highly reviewed or whatever? I'd be curious to know what you're seeing that others aren't.

For one, they made Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have faith that they can make competent and well-designed games. I also think that this game is essentially what Thief would have been if designed for modern audiences instead of for hardcore 90s PC gamers. I don't think it's a total disgrace to the franchise because of some different design choices.
On the topic of a multiplayer action Thief game, I'm curious how the community would have genuinely reacted if the new Thief had multiplayer like Thievery UT, in a hypothetical world where Thievery UT had never existed. I am relatively sure that it would have been met with huge amounts of backlash, despite how well it works. I also think that leaderboards are actually a neat addition to a stealth game. It's nice to be able to compare your score with others, and it's not like Thief games didn't effectively have a basic scoring system in place already with the loot/time taken mechanics.

Just an FYI this team didn't make Human Revolution. Eidos Montreal is composed of multiple development teams just like every other game studio.

there's quite a bit of discussion on it Vae dresses up as a scarecrow and puts "abomination" behind every snippet of information because those optimistic people who cannot think on their own get an idea of what opinion they should have.
Fixed.
It's the usual dilemma, extreme opinions are perceived louder than down-to-earth ones even if negligible in quantity and weak in quality.

I'm really not against any kind of leaderboard - hell, people have been doing speedruns for years anyway. And even The Dark Mod has a stealth score for each mission. These are changes I'm not opposed to. The multiplayer stuff I'm not too crazy about, but that's probably not completely fair because I've never played Thievery or Multiplayer Thief 2. I guess I'd say I'd be open to it if it was done right. It's just in concept it seems like a goofy idea - my only impression of any kind of multiplayer is of a chaotic, frenetic fragfest. That doesn't exactly lend itself well to a typical Thief session.

Thievery was a great idea but was pretty un-Thiefy in practice. It wasn't a frag fest but it was far too fast. I wanted a sprint power bar but no one else did. People were just running everywhere so it wasn't really tense like SP Thief.
