I think the slowed movement is one of the things I like least. Isn't that kind or arbitrary?
It's certainly possible for movement to be
too slow, and I wouldn't want that. But from what I've seen in the movies, thief 4 suffers from the opposite problem: Garrett's crouching speed is one of my bigger gameplay concerns. If I really can keep up with guards while doing completely silent crouch moving, there's not going to be a lot of meaningful choice to how fast I move: crouch movement will be good enough 95% of the time. I'm hoping slowed movement gives me more meaningful choices while not going so far that movement becomes painful. Otherwise I won't use it.

It's a nice set of options, which baffles me even more that they force the shroud on people, I'm really at a loss. Regardless of the real reason they aren't making it optional however, the shrouds desaturation and flashing is an absolute deal breaker no matter how good the rest of the game is.
All these options made me a bit hopeful for likely the first time with Thief, then hearing about the shroud dashed it all. EM just seems to be in shambles over what direction to take the game. What a mess.
:Edit: Perhaps they are thinking if they make both the shroud and light gem optional, uninformed users could turn both off, then get frustrated at the games seemingly arbitrary stealth mechanics; a fail safe for retards. In which case, they should just plaster a warning if you try to disable both, or make the game turn on the the light gem when you disable the shroud and vice versa.
At the very least, they better not go the trendy route and needlessly encrypt all the games files to lock out modding.

They won't let us disable shroud? Man, that's the one thing about the UI that bothered me the most. I like the concept of first person hands, but holding them out like that looks dumb. The hands aren't really my concern though, it's how freaking irritating the sides of my vision are being, well, shrouded.
I'd also like to have manual and auto saving be split into two options. I'd still like to be able to save on my own, but without the game deciding what time I should save anyway.

I guess this is them overcoming fan resistance. A million customizable options will never fix a fundamentally broken game (in fact, it can make it even worse!), so I find it pretty difficult to be impressed by an options menu. The inclusion of hardcore options in recent reboots never really helped them.
Superfluous features like "iron man mode" or "move slower-mode" are nice gestures, but every glimpse of actual game play has been worrying. So show us the improvement of that.

This game is offering more custom difficulty and UI settings than 95% of games released, and all you want to talk about is how you can't jump, lean or swim. As though those are the defining traits of the game.

I believe they are! Or atleast should be. Just as they were in the originals. Are you saying custom difficulty and UI settings are somehow more important?

I'm saying I couldn't give even a third of a crap less if I can swim, jump or lean as long as the game itself is fun to play and challenging. Nothing else matters. I don't have some predetermined rule set of what I will accept as a "real Thief game". I just want a game that is fun and stealth-focused. I don't care if I can jump, I don't care if I can swim, I don't care if I can lean.
Would it be nice to be able to? Sure. But it's not going to utterly ruin the game for me because I can't, and I think it's illogical to claim that the game will be a putrid abomination and a blight on mankind simply because the movement doesn't work
exactly the same way that you've decided it should.

Well, most people around here do. And they should. Thief is a classic and thus has a higher standard to meet for most gamers.

Fine, then go play Hitman, Splinter Cell, or Metal Gear. These games are fun. But Thief is unique, and I'd like it to stay that way.
No offense to you, but I really think you just don't get it. At all.

Let me set something straight: were this game going by any other title, I would have been all over it. When they decided to put Thief on the box, they set a standard that they haven't yet met in my eyes.
Contextual jumping and leaning are contrary to everything the originals accomplished. So yes, I'm going to give them shit for it. Iron man mode can't fix that.
