Yes. You have to sneak (ctrl key) up to them and hit the space bar (as if you were talking to them) while in sneak mode, when their name appears over them on screen. You'll get the same box like when you pilfer stuff from a dead body.
You may not always get everything in their inventory; what appears in it, and whether they notice, is, presumably, governed by how good you are at sneaking. This means you may get different items every time you try to pickpocket the same person, so if the thing you're after (e. g. a key) is not in their inventory, try again.

Careful, though. If they catch you stealing from them, they'll report your crime.
