Has anyone come up with a format converter yet? I want to make some smeshes for practice, but I can't stand using 3DS Max, and thusly, don't want to have to track down an old version to make em.

Sorry man, but I guess that is the only way. I have to say that is a stupid manoeuvre from the authors, as stupid should be doing a petition to adjourn that damned 3DSmax libraries (how it's possibile that a software works ONLY for a single version??? and in specific, an update??). I hope Eidos will change their sight, because without a proper fan missions support, the game will haven't much success, and a proper support it have only with elastic editing interfaces, that can work in many different platforms.

Apart from e.g. Ubisoft, Eidos is at the top of the list of game companies that don't give a damn about the players or gaming communities. :erg: They haven't done anything through the years, don't expect that they would now (the same goes for dromed).

I know it, i know it... :(
If I ever enter to the professional world of games, I will never forget this problem, and I will do all in my possibilities to enhance this situation.

To be fair, they supported (and bankrolled) the work done for the editor release.

Well, what is it exactly that keeps people from exporting models from newer programs to Max 5? Couldn't someone use something like Deep Exploration as a go between from one modeler to the other?

I work in max 7, export to 3ds, import in Max 5, reset the pivot, weld the vertices and export out to thief.
The only reason we have to use max 5 is because of the exporter.
Though I may be completely misreading your question.

Hummm.. what effective improvements they have brought to the newer version?? I use5.1 for all ... I dubt keeping two versions of 3DStudio is a lost of hard disk space...

Nope. You answered my question dead on. I've been thinking you had to use Max 5 for everything. Like you couldn't model in Modo, then export it as a .3ds file to Max 5 due to some funky format differences between older and newer versions of Max.
I can accept having to use Max 5 at some point in the process, so long as I don't have to model with it. I'm more used to the Lightwave/Modo way of doing things, which feels so much more intuitive and free flowing to me. The whole object based modeling thing freaks me out everytime I try and have a go at it.
