Yes i thought about that, too.
Right now i am asking myself if there should be categories as database entries or "in smesh name" categories, which means that everybody has to put a category tag before the name of his smesh. I think the second method is better because while there arent so many smeshes uploaded it will suck to browse all the categories... It will be better to just sort them in alphabetical order. Other sort methods will be "sort by Author" and "newest". Any further ideas?
Here are the upload rules:
Quote:
I) Put one of the following categories(plus subcategory devided by a dot) before the name of your upload to make sure that browsing this library will always be a clean procedure.
* Architecture
* Arch
* Buttress
* Column/Beam
* Domes/Vaults
* Doors/frames
* Floor
* Railing
* Ruin
* Stairs
* Support
* Trim
* Windows/frames
* other
* Furniture
* Bed
* Chairs
* Couches
* Chests
* Desk/Dresser
* Shelves
* Table
* other
* Housetop
* Chimney
* Gable
* Roof
* Light
* Flame
* Electric
* Setdressing
* Electrical
* Fence
* Mechanical
* Nature
* Statue
* Walldecorations
* other
If you want to add a bed called "expensive bed" your upload entry should be named "Furniture.Bed expensive Bed"
II) Always zip before upload (max filesize 250kb)
III) Max picturesize 150kb
IV) Do not upload any non T3 static mesh
Do you have any suggestions on these? Perhaps better formulations or other categories?

What about source files (.max, or other 3d formats when conversion tools are available)?

I dont see the use of that. If someone wants to edit a smesh he could just convert it to .3ds BUT if someone does not have 3ds 5.1 he cannot compile it to .tim . At the moment there is no tim -> 3ds tool available, as you all know. And we dont know when of even if there will be one, because Sparhawk said that it is very hard to get into that fileformat.
I am working on the Design yet. Its nothing big. Just some playing around with inkscape(I just use it for designing. The page wount consist of any vectorgfx). But anyway Ill post it later...

I think it would be better to have a dedicated mesh library, that can be linked to from the wiki if necessary.
I'm not against anyone making a mesh library, I was just suggesting that a few could be uploaded manually for the time being. We are a long way from actually having something you could call a library after all. It really depends how many people produce models. As far as I know there are only a handful so far.

I'm saying if people find a mesh they like but not the uvw wrapping they can use the source files to fix it. What frustrates me is not having source files for AI, matlibs (easily converted though), etc. Also if someone models an AI but doesn't know how to rig or animate then they can upload the source file so someone else can work on it.

I agree with Ascottk, source files should be included for convenience sake. This is a good idea, by the way. I have a quite a few statice meshes in my level now. I am planning on creating a resource pack of textures and smeshes after I've finished the level, but I would not hesitate to upload them here as well.

Thirded on the source files.

Fourthed.
Source is always useful, even if it just helps the original author recover from a hard drive crash.

Ok! I am convinced. But then we will need some new database entries and some categories. We should perhaps add AI and uvmap as categories and we should specify during the upload whether the uploaded file is a compiled static mesh or a source file.
And back to the categories. I think i am going to make them as categories too so that you can choose one from a pulldown menu and then click on browse to see it. The browsepanel could look like this(i do only mean functionality)

http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/4933/browsepanel1kz.jpgThe design is nearly ready and i will start to work on the scripting in the next days with a friend. So please give as many oppinions as possible about all this. We make this library for all you editors out there so it should represent everyones oppinion.

I wouldn't use radiobuttons - they take up more space than necessary and make it harder to add categories later (you might want to search by filesize or date as well as just author and name, for example).
For upload I would suggest two paths on the form (with Browse buttons for convenience): a compulsory "release" ZIP containing the TIM and necessary readme files, and an optional "source" ZIP containing whatever source files the author chooses to release.
