assless chaps would make this game so much better
Starker on 10/6/2016 at 18:25
There's probably a mod for that.
scumble on 10/6/2016 at 22:32
Well there was a "nude raider" mod very early on if I recall correctly.

Staggering across some boards waiting for them for fall off for a Dramatic Moment.
So dramatic that they are completely predictable and happen every other semi-automated climbing segment. AND THEN SURPRISE! LARA SLIPS AND FALLS, suffering damage the likes of which would make anyone immobile/break bones, only for her to get up and do exactly the same the next time. I was surprised one instance this happened she got messed up and had to look for medical aid, but all the other times it happened it was completely glossed over, even if there are gameplay/pacing reasons for that, yet the problem is writing a story where this stupid shit happens over and over in the first place. It'd be more dramatic, thrilling and organic if your failings as a climber put you in those "dramatic" situations, rather than Laras, and like in the good old classics, you fall you fucking die, or if you are lucky under logical circumstances, you may live. How am I supposed to find these scenes dramatic, immersive and life-threatening when they are so frequent and predictable and I just know survival is guaranteed through no actions of my own (well, maybe a QTE, of fucking course)?
But nothing's a requirement, it's Lara's/the developer's story, not yours the player, and I'm quite happy to be told a story or be a very minor influence on it, yet the problem is that it's just a poorly executed story and game in many respects, though the story is less flawed than the game part I suppose.
One of these days we'll get a modern platformer that isn't shit, or in this game's case just about playable I guess. It's better than Assassin's Creed anyway, so at least its got that going for it.

Still playing, and I even made a short video. One of the moments of Lara doing impossible jumps, and running across buildings that are falling off a cliff.

A couple of small edits for fails at the end of the run. The story is barely holding together here, because LC is still just rushing to save some people that I can't see the connection with. Yet it's still entertaining to play.

The presentation is generally the best thing about it, but I'm not easily impressed by flashy things. And further still there's so many inconsistencies in presentation, in this video alone we've got a sniper who's nattering away while simultaneously making perfect sniper shots, lara speaking with perfect clarity while holding on for dear life and climbing, she's audibly speaking yet we don't see her mouth move during the short transition as she climbs up onto the bridge itself, and finally the dumbfuck bad guy who has just witnessed all his friends be sniped by the expert multitasking marksman, instead of running away or simply pushing this grave threat perched on the edge off the bridge, an opportunity that would be clear to even the most simple of minds, decides he's going to grab, lift up and "break this bitch's neck", and narrate the fact to his dead friends.
Shit design is shit. Most of the movie-like games can't even get the movie-like part right even though they so readily set aside the game part.

I didn't have the patience to edit a load of video from yesterday, so I've skipped the escape from the monastery which was blown up and falling apart.
The beach with all the decaying ships and concrete is particularly well done. Interesting that a few more "brothers" had been wandering about and didn't notice LC's mates faffing about with the boat.
I paused to admire the view, but LC's trousers are looking the worse for wear.

After all this work all I got was a coin from that treasure chest and a skill point...

I'm glad someone left this campsite in an abandoned military installation underground, still lit.

Sarcasm aside, I think it's easy to pick holes in the immersion, but the game still works. There's always a balance between "realism" and convenience, so the hopping about platformy bits and the combat setups are fun. Too much realism is actually dull.
There are just a few too many sequences of impossible escapes from exploding and disintegrating scenery. It's overused and becomes tiresome.

It's
very easy to with this game.
Yeah it works...sub-optimally I'd say.

Absolutely. Well, not necessarily. But oftentimes, yes.

My primary problem with this game and many others like it of this era is precisely that they are not, in my opinion. Well, they can be, and the game isn't the worst out there, but in my eyes this just isn't how it is meant to be, it doesn't engage well, it doesn't even try to meet the standards set by older, better platformer/action/adventure games. I don't wish to repeat myself on the matter though as myself and Nameless Voice discussed Tomb Raider's gameplay failings not too long ago.

Just one dumb flaw of many...

Exactly what i think.
It's super hard to miss a jump, gameplay in general is super shallow.

Yeah. In contrast there's rather a lot of gameplay elements: platforming, exploration, combat, puzzles, crafting, RPG progression, yet each and every one of those elements is indeed super shallow and just not very meaningful, engaging nor synergistic. All considerably lesser to older designs, but of course those older designs demanded you use your head on an elementary schooler's level, and we can't have that now can we...
But hey, most people simply don't recognize these things or do not have anything worthwhile to compare it to, or they played some older games but never actually
played, completed and analyzed them, or they simply don't care "because they don't play games to have to think" . And so the ancient art of great gameplay was lost, almost overnight, and there's just no real demand for it beyond making it look good.
