They've got both the original 94 floppy version and the 95 CD versions as well, you get all of them.
While the GOG version has the DOS CD version, I had serious trouble getting it
A) running at a decent framerate at 640 x 480, and
B) Major Joystick calibration problems regardless of whether I enabled timing mode or not.
Eventually I just went with the Windows version for practical reasons. The throttle support is nice to have too, though it does only support four speed settings. Though I DID just acquire a Dos/Windows 98 PC, so I may mess with the DOS version of Tie Fighter some on that thing. Anyone know if there is a way to port save games between the two releases?
Having played the Freespace games first, I'm continually amazed at how many design elements in those games came from Tie Fighter.

X-Wing should totally be skipped.
Too hard for you? :p

If I remember correctly, both games use the .PLT extension as pilot profiles. It's in the root game folder. You can TRY to copy it over to the other game but whether it works or not is another question.

the original 94 floppy version
For a second there I interpreted this as the game coming on 94 floppy discs. :p

I wish someone would eventually find a way to port all of the previous X-Wing and Tie Fighter games into the XWA engine.

Thanks for all the recommendations!
I decided to give <s>Jedi Academy</s> STAR WARS™ Jedi Knight™: Jedi Academy™ a try at first. It doesn't look that great anymore, the controls feel a bit clumsy at times, but there's some potential with all the different Force powers and lightsaber stuff, I believe. Or I hope so, anyway.
However, before I really even got anywhere far in the game (I'll get back to it eventually!), I got distracted by <s>KotOR 2</s> STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™ II: The Sith Lords™ (feat. The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod). Man, I should have played this a long time ago. I loved the first game, and I don't know what exactly the restoration mod changes, but this one seems to be even better. Looks like I've already played it for 12 hours during the last three days, and I'm still only on the second planet. It's a shame that the combat system still seems to suck though. I wish that I had a bit more control over the characters, or that the AI was a little better at least. All the fights so far have been easy peasy and boring, but hopefully things will get more interesting later on. The story and the characters seem really good so far though!
STAR WARS™ Republic Commando might be the next game on my list, but I want to finish STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™ II: The Sith Lords™ before that at least, and when that time arrives I may have had enough of everything STAR WARS™ related for a while, so we shall see...

I'm playing Jedi Outcast, I forgot how horrible the level design is :/
Jason Moyer on 29/12/2015 at 00:32
I quite like Jedi Outcast other than that fucking Nar Shadaa or wherever it is level. On the other hand, it is basically the quintessential Q3-engined game, so there has to be a snipertown level.
Slasher on 29/12/2015 at 03:38
Huh, I never made the connection between Medal of Honor's Snipertown and Jedi Outcast's Nar Shaddaa, but now that you mention it they do have some painful similarities.
Dark Forces was the shit back in the day. And before comments about X-Wing's difficulty discourage you, I think the Windows version of the game features rebalanced missions that tone down the frustration. Your chances of succeeding are now 5% instead of 2%.
EvaUnit02 on 29/12/2015 at 05:15
I dunno WTF happened with Jedi Outcast. Raven's prior game Elite Force was a rather straight-forward Half-Life clone. Outcast was a regression to nigh Hexen levels of trash map design.

A reverse-engineered source port of Dark Forces was just released.
