Star Control 2 Released Under the GPL
Jagasian writes "The classic computer space adventure role playing game known as Star Control 2 has been officially ported from its obsolete mono-platform source code to modern multi-platform C++/SDL source code. The game is open source, and compiles and runs on Linux! The alpha release binaries are available for download now!" (Slashdot.org)
The Ur-Quan Masters
(

"The project started in August 2002, when Toys For Bob released the sources of Star Control 2 3DO version to the fan community. Our goal is to port this wonderful game to current personal computers and operating systems. It is and will remain 100% free of charge, and anyone can contribute to the project and thus help make it even better. For more information, look at our info page."

YAY! :D
I must have spent ages playing that game against my brother... :)

Toys for Bob was doing an SC2 remake, whatever happened to that?

Also note Protostar, which some of the SC2/Starflight people made after SC2.
IMO it isn't quite as good as the other three, but you can get it at Underdogs:

(If you liked SC2 for the fighting, steer clear. Those who liked the plot/exploration angles of SF1, SF2, and SC2 should take a peek, but the plot is weaker in Protostar.)

Another similar effort: Iron Seed

I never managed to win the final battle (argh!) and it does have its small troubles with actually understanding some events, but it has some real originality in the premise, a nice gritty feel to it, and a nifty system for construction of components.

The Ur-Quan Masters v0.6.1 is out! It's a bug-fix for 0.6.0, which was released last month (but newsworthy I think, as it's been ages since the project was mentioned here).
From the 0.6.0 release blurb:
Quote:
Happy days and jubilation! It's The Ur-Quan Masters 0.6.0.
And The Ur-Quan Masters 0.6.0 means network SuperMelee!
And it means in-game key configuration.
And it means support for 64 bit systems.
And it means more bugfixes.
And it means more internal improvements which you won't care about.

Holy thread necromancy worthy of a pkunk batman.
They still haven't put out the final remix yet, have they?

Not completely, it seems.

Don't let that stop you from playing this game; I did over a year ago for the first time and the music was still quite excellent. The beauty of this project is that the original tunes were also done out-of-studio by volunteer fans (IIRC).
Too bad I'm moving, now would be a good time to scare up some network'd melee on the IRC (if I had any takers).
