OK, so it works now, though I'm still a little irked about how long it took me to find a solution.

Why? Laptops never were supported, nor intended to be. The fact that you got it to work, and your last one worked, should be enough to be satisfied with.
And, as Bikerdude asked,
what did you do to make it work? It would be a great help to other gamers if you detailed exactly what you did and how you did it, and posted that in one of the "How to make it run..." or "Fix it" threads.

Doing what bikerdude said, of course. I think the problem here is that some patches rely on the other with my laptop for the most absurd reason. Aslo, I had to use ddfixgui with ddfix 1.1.1 (is it? I'll correct that, but its the oldest version available from the ddfix website). As one person has noted, that older version relies on directx 9 better than the newer ones (which rely on 6 or something, which might be the reason why I was having so much trouble getting the game to work correctly).
But please note that I have the higher model intel graphics chips in my laptop, so it won't apply to the gma 950 series (I should know. My older laptop installed the game fine w/o a hitch)

Oh, I know that. It's just well, y' know, the game worked fine before I reinstalled vista, but somehow, some way, the ddfix dillema I was having made this rather simple solution so far-away and seemingly never to be found... Something that will leave me bedridden for weeks on end...
Or at least for a day and a half.
Oh, and b4 I 4get, about that damned clipping:
It had something to do with the bloom effect patch. Totally solved as long as I don't download that beautiful (but useless) thing ever again.

Thanks. It may help some other Vista user to cure their problems.
It is always appreciated when someone fixes a "broken" game and then Tells us how he did it. Otherwise the next guy/gal has to try to find a cure by reinventing the wheel.
