I have a P4 3Ghz, 1 gig of ram and an X800XT which I would call a high end but perhaps a little dated system. I've yet to find a game that I can't run on at least medium/high settings.
That's right, same config here and 7600GT. It's quite sufficient for Oblivion and Stalker is playable with FDR on and mid-high settings, except that I can use only medium textures, otherwise the stuttering becomes unbearable. One more GB RAM could help but I have better expenses.
I could get one of those dualcores, dualchannel memory... but what the heck for ?
There are only very few modern games that are able to catch my attention though, I'd like to find more time to replay some classics. If you can run a classic game at full details and pump up antialiasing, it gives you a real high-end feeling. :cheeky:

But he's already running at high settings.
Depending on your setup though, dual channeling you memory could be a cheap way to improve performance since all it relies on is having 2/4 sticks of RAM and a board that supports dual channel. I have two 512MB sticks of DDR 400 in dual channel with space for another two if I can ever get round to actually paying for them. Do people think another gig of ram would significantly improve performance in Oblivion, Stalker, Quake wars and Bioshock? I hope to put off upgrading to a dual core until around christmas though obviously this depends on whether my system will be able to hack these new games.
Hell, if only more games were as well coded as Quake 4. That manages to look amazing and run better than most other high end games. I guess Quake wars uses the same engine, I just hope my PC can handle those big environments with all those players running around. Bioshock also uses Unreal 3, which should be pretty solid. Just have to wait and see, I guess.

Absolutely yes, more RAM you have the better. With my 2 gb dualchannel ram I've never had any memory leak problem since after 4-5 hours of play it eats at most 1.5gb of ram. I can quit the game almost instantly and then reload it again.
I have a question to experts, though. I have four slots on my mobo for dualchannel memory and it supports up to 4GB of ram. At the moment I have 2 sticks, 1 gb each, on board and two sticks of 512MB each hidden away should the need arise :) I heard that it's not a good thing to fill all the slots, I've read it on Corsair Memory forums. People filled their slots, willing to have as much memory as they could and some weeks later they begun to have problems with the system.
If it's a pile of crap, I'm jumping up to 3GB right now.
(2GB are DDR400, OEM memory and those 2 x 512 DDR 400 are Samsung)

I am satisfied with how games run on it so far and I expect it stays so for one more year. I'll get one more GB RAM perhaps.
Computer is the not only thing I have to fund from my salary, but it has a good side effect - I won't become a total hardware consuming snob. :erm:

I haven't enjoyed playing a PC game this much since the Thief series. Even if Stalker is not completely bug free it was still great! And I'd like to play this game again, differently this time. It's not just any game you want to play all over again instantly after you have finished it. For me it only happened before with LGS games, all of them.
These Ukranian guys made a classic! Молодцы ребята!!!!!

It's kind of funny, but in my case System Shock 2 and Chronicles of Riddick have an equal addiction value on me, and then comes Stalker. I will more than likely start again after finishing it and try some new strategies.
