After seeing the hype among TTLGers, I finally shelled out the dough for Stalker and played like a maniac over the last day ...
I had a lot of problems initially coming to grips with the firearms' performance (at least until I upgraded to decent mid-ranged weapons) , but quickly adapted my Far Cry style of snipe-and-fade on the generic human enemies that I met out in the open.
Guess what's my favourite artifact:
Moonlight, the best of the Endurance boosters. I was lucky to get one early in the game and it allowed me to keep running like I was Forrest Gump - perfect for my snipe-and-fade style in the open or simply outrun enemies I don't want to bother fighting.
However, I find myself suffering terribly from claustrophobia when I venture into buildings and underground tunnels, especially when having to deal with non-human opposition. My fave style of snipe-and-fade don't work well in enclosesd spaces. I'm being reminded of the one time I played Thief: Deadly Shadows' Shalebridge Cradle, minus the panic button flash bombs fallback option.

i've said it before and i'll say it again:

i still have to finish jade empire and my 6th replay of Thief3 before I REALLY
dwell into STALKER(without.the.dots). I played 2 hours to test if it runs on
my machine and I can only agree with you that the first two weapons
(pistol & shotgun) are good for nothing. I had much trouble getting over
the first mission with only a pistol at hand and higher difficulty than stalker
(don't remember the name for the next level).
but I am certainly hooked and I love the anomalies and mutated animals !

I dont have this game but here are some FPS tips:
- If your a sniper in a small area, bring a pistol and your running shoes. (Also if you feel pumped, bring a knife.)
- Set up a base camp. In STALKER dont you have to eat and sleep? Well set up a camp EVERYWHERE not some place that you have to run to. I would say the best camping spots are on top of buildings.
- Listen to some good music while playing. Ex. Aha, Take on Me.

Aha, Take on Me.

I've never played an FPS before but here are some tips anyway:
- Use the keyboard and mouse to move around. (Also if you feel pumped, use a joystick.)
- Avoid bullets. In FPS dont enemies shoot at you? Well move away from bullets being fired. I would say this is a good way to stay alive.
- Listen to some music that doesn't match the game's mood. Ex. Aha, Take on Me.
